Hi all.
I hope this is the correct section.
I have a 2003 td5 auto and love it.
We have just purchased our first caravan and love it. The issue I have is the car drinks diesel.

I'm getting 25mpg day to day with no AC on and taking it super steady etc.

I haven't and don't dare work out what it's doing towing. The caravan is only small and single axle so no beast of a thing.

Thinking EGR blank and possibly and remap might help.

Any thoughts?

We have only got about 23mpg from our TD5 and it didn't alter much when towing. Probably because the speed was lower. They are heavy and the price is fuel consumption.
 
Depends what roads you're driving I often get about 600miles out of a tank normal day to day driving which is country roads, a roads and a little bit of town driving. On the way to the Land Rover show in Peterborough from Devon I got about 700 miles out of a tank. So around 30mpg plus.
Haven't done much towing with mine. Only mods I've done is egr delete, silicone hoses, and a full service and ensuring correct running temperature of the vehicle.

^^^ What he says ^^^ it's never going to be great on fuel with a box on the back.

EGR delete may improve things slightly (maybe 1 or 2 mpg) a remap may also help, but stock up on manifold studs ready!!!

Misspoke in my first post I meant 30ish to the gallon for normal driving and getting the 600miles. Then I put 30 plus mpg (over 30mpg) on the run to to Peterborough however it wasn't an exact science in that case so although in order to get 700 miles would mean doing about 35mpg. I was doing something above 30mpg. Because when I filled up at 600 miles I still had 2 bars left
 
May sound crazy, and I've often wondered why it isn't more common but would a wind deflector help on the roof of the towing vehicle?
Articulated HGV's have plastic panels on the back of the cab to adjust the 'size' to that of the trailer to improve aerodynamics between the two which makes a significant improvement in fuel economy, why don't cars/vans/4x4's do the same? I'm sure they do it in the great old US of A....
 
I don't tow - but I am getting between 33 - 35 MPG commuting via motorway every day (500 miles a week). If you are getting a figure in the 30s whilst towing, I think you are doing very well (I usually cruise at around 60MPH in 5th).

that's good mpg thats being achieved on a D2 , mines got a 18 gallon tank and dont take any notice of the mpg instrument display , or liemeter as it's also known, lol

getting around 550 miles on a tank at 65mph and if i'm honest really pleased

winter time around town it will get around 15mpg when the fbh kicks in

Check the tires and get a service. Might make an improvement but it won't be much.

When I towed with both my disco 1 and Disco 2 ,both auto, there was not a lot of difference overall. about 23/26
I certainly kept my speed within legal limits for towing.
Recent trip to the Scottish borders(no motorway) reasonable driving and I cleared 32/33 mpg driving solo.
Calculated brim to brim filling up.
As said before caravans with a sloping front will help with fuel usage.
 
For comparison, our D2 V8 does 24 or so on a run, our P38 Vogue 4.6 has just done Rosyth and back, 3-up with heavy tools and luggage, averaged 20mpg according to the trip computer.

Towing the big trailer at 3500kgs we get 10-12mpg with the Discovery, haven't been out with it on the P38 yet.

That sounds awful Peter! Makes our Merc trucks at work 12litre 6 pot derv's with a 30 tonne double deck trailer that average about 8/9 MPG Sound pretty economical!!
 
I did went to southern spain in the spring towing a fleetwood caravan got 19mpg if clogging it 22mpg if i took it steady
