Did a fuel filter change on my Td5 D2 and after purging the air out it started fine. Next start was a little hesitant but ok, however since then if it hasn't been started for a couple of days it fires on cranking then cuts out, crank again and it will usually start but very 'lumpy' eventually idling at correct speed.
Today it took three tries of the starter to get it running, once it has run during the day it will start fine for the rest of the day.
It has done quite a few trips since the filter was changed so I'm finding it difficult to believe there is still air in the system but I'm not sure what the problem is. I've been told there is a one-way valve near the filter which should vent any excess air but there is obviously a problem – anybody got any ideas?

You may have a problem with the fuel pump!!???

Had that happen a couple of months ago?

Pump changed! All good now!

Did you fill the filter with fuel before fitting it ? If not, that can put quite a bit of air into the loop....
 
If the air was completely purged from the fuel system, you have no leaks and the pump spinning sound on ignition is normal, then I would replace the filter just in case the one you have is defective. It's the cheapest and easiest option before you start taking things apart.

I think thats good advice and I have a spare so first thing to do. I've also been told that the one-way valve on the housing can jam open or get clogged and that allows air back in – anyone had that issue?

There are many reports on this forum re. issues with the NRV and how to replace. Here's one -

If a new filter does not help, that would be my next step. If it looks the worse for wear, I'd consider changing the entire housing which comes with everything fitted -

I changed the entire housing, fuel lines and fuel pump last year on my lads TD5 defender last year, as it was in such a poor condition. In the last month its now having starting issues. I took off the fuel temp sensor from the FPR, and stuck in a fuel pressure tester, and got the expected 4 bar on ignition. Still trying to sort out its starting issue as t turns over for about 20 seconds before firing up. My Disco is having the same issue, so watching this thread with anticipation..... Next step for us is replacing the FPR.

Tilly 2- just wanted to check your comment, are you saying you put in new glow plugs and you still got the poor starting issue??

This I have only had time to replace the fuel filter again in mine as suggested in one of the other replies to my thread and it hasn't made any difference, if anything it somewhat worse and I note the weather is got quite a bit cooler, again making me think glow plugs a possibility. However if you have replaced yours and of got exactly the same poor starting issues it does take me back to the fuel system and probably the filter housing
