Hi Everyone -
Just after a bit of advice/where to look next. Me and my mate are doing up a TD5 we bought which was a non runner. I'm no stranger to TD5 having just virtually rebuilt my own however mines a manual and this is an Auto.

Now the M&S lights are flashing along with the D - I know that M&S can be low voltage so we've put a brand new battery on it which was fully charged, cleaned the terminals on the starter and up and the battery terminals, have adjusted the XYZ switch, have also opened it up and checked it all and cleaned it, Checked the Auto box Fluid Level, changed the gear inside the cab goes all the way to the 1st but the D light just flashes, had the negative cable onto a good earth in the engine and checked the wiring at the top of the gearbox and I can't see any breaks in any of the wires, it also had a new CPS before we got it and have check the wiring was a break and someone had knackered the multi plug and put new wires on and we've re done them.

I did plug it into my Code reader and all it comes up with is CAN Timeout Monitoring and CAN Level Monitoring but wouldn't read the Engine ECU.

I have tried the Reverse Wiper test (not sure how accurate it is) and the rear wiper works when I put the car in reverse. It cranks over but just won't start!

I am going to get some better sandpaper/wire brush tomorrow for the starter but before I get another XYZ switch is there anything else it could be that I'm missing?

Also have noticed that the Temp Gauge on the dash goes all the way up to the top and the overheat light stays on instead of staying on the cold like my manual does.

On another note we can't hear the fuel pump running when the ignition is turned on I have changed the relay from the one on mine (which works) still no good! Have checked the voltage which its getting 5 Volts. It had a new pump on before we bought it. I don't know what could cause this to happen.

Is there anything that I could of missed as were trying to desperately get it started!

Thank you

The CAN bus is only used to communicate between the auto box ECU and the engine ECU, if they don't communicate you will get that error. As you cannot communicate with the engine ECU the problem would seem to be with the engine ECU. The ECU also switches on the fuel pump and drives the temp gauge so it all points to either the ECU not getting its power or it is dead. If the engine cranks, the XYZ switch is not causing this particular problem.

By the way, you can only check the auto box level with the engine running.

Good luck.

Hi, you'll have to check with multimeter if the ECU gets power, first of all see on F1 engine bay with ignition on 2, if no power unplug and bridge pins in the inertia switch's connector to rule it out and swap relay R9 too

where did you measure that 5V and how?

It might be worth checking the engine ecu for oil ingress from the injector harness via the red plug as this can cause flashing m+s lights.
If you have a nanocom code reader it is worth checking the bcu ecu that it has not changed the vehicle from automatic to manual transmission (a known problem) and you can read the outputs from the xyz switch received by both the BCU and AT ecus and compare them to help find a fault in the wiring harness or if the xyz switch is itself receiving power from the bcu ecu.
