My thinking is it's pretty obvious they have never been changed in its 21 years of service so I'd like to get as much out as possible :)

Then just leave them overnight and change in the morning when they have had 10 hrs to drain down.
People get obsessed with getting every last drop out, in reality is makes no difference.
 
Only time you want oil warm/hot is when vaccing the oil out via the dipstick, not something to worry about on d1/2 models as plenty of room underneath.
Unless your sump plug won't undo, like mine!!
I;) "suck it up" out the dipstick hole and it is easier when hot!
 
Well I managed it cold and the only problem I had was the filler bottle I had to squeeze in the fresh wouldn't go in the fill hole, the original plastic nuts had not been touched before and replaced with the brass one's :D
