I've got a slightly difficult to describe noise coming from my engine when it's warm and I'm trying to trace it. I think it only seems to be when under load as it's not really noticiable when idling on the driveway - either that or it's not warmed up enough when I check it on the drive!

It sounds a bit like the tappets are very rattly, and is louder than the usual diesel clatter. I was wondering if it could be the lift pump? It does keep with the engine speed, and has the sound of a smally/tinny component, if that makes much sense?

Any ideas folks?

Me too, it's driving me mental, revs up without noise and while driving along as soon as you back off the throttle at mid rpm under load it goes away and recurs when I put my foot down again. Sounds like only one cylinder, and is intermittent. So far I have changed the lift pump, which made the diesel pump quieter, changed the manifold gasket which has stopped the oily seepage on the block and checked the tappers several times, and changed the vac pump and also the power steering pump. Next I'm going to check the injectors, and if that doesn't sort it the heads coming off.

Not much help, BUT, in situations like this I find it's good to use a listening rod to locate the source of the vibration. Usually use the nearest bit of 1/8 tube I have around the workshop, should be easily discernible where it is loudest.

I don't think this is the same Kes - my rattle is consistently there once the lump is up to temp, and it keeps up with engine speed - up or down - but doesn't go away until the engine is cold again.

Thanks trax, kwacker and almonds - will check those/have a close listen. The more I read though, the more consistent it seems with vac pump wear so will look at eliminating that from the list.

Just need to find a bit of tube now! :)

Just make sure the tip of the tube makes solid contact, and doesn't rest on anything else. Few time I've been caught out like that leaving me scratching my head. Good Luck!!!
