ok so I have been doing more work but seem to keep forgetting the camera
I ordered full mintex discs and pads stainless calliper rebuild kits new steering damper new power steering pump service kit and various other odds and ends
And it totally ****ed me off today for lack of better words now I have some advice if your doing something like this do it only while you enjoy it don't do it as a chore or a job the second you stop enjoying it you start the that will do attitude and start slacking off
if you get ****ed off walk away
if you get frustrated walk away
if you stop enjoying welding rebuilding painting just walk away do something else !! come back later
ok so I finally put my shocks on 3 corners at least
I stripped the rear end and attacked it with various wire brush attachments to clean her up but for 23 years old she's in good condition well at least the chassis is
All painted up with 2 coats of buzzweld CIO
Yes I know my springs need replaced but I am still on the fence as to what to do 2+ springs and 2+ blocks or just 2+ springs I have the 2+ blocks fitted just now
I also hit this side with wet n dry 3000g to clean up 23 years of what looks like never been washed paint
then got the rotary out and polished a little (my pad exploded others ordered)
So I cut the holes out at the alpine windows both side the exact same after 2 hours of bending plates and binning them trying to get a perfect but weld joint I lapped the bottom half and but welded the top
So I then attacked the rear body x member cut the rot off and welded in a 5mm Dunbar plate hopefully stop it being damaged from heavy crap being dropped on it
I have also nearly finished the boot floor about 1 full days welding to be done hopefully be done for the weekend
now onto some brake work as can be done at night in the shed I stripped all 4 callipers off and decided to put them into an electrolysis bath for 24 hours and I am still shocked at how well this works zero effort I want a tank big enough for the whole car to be dipped in
this is the after but before paint picture and this was after a pleasure wash so I ordered all the rebuild kit and stainless pistons to bring these old girls back to life
after all the clippers had been derusted by salty water and electricity I painted them black with CIO and fitted new stainless pistons and seals (thanks LRTV Youtube for inspiration) painting was perfectly timed as we are redoing the back bedroom for the arrival of the new born in July so paint fumes are aloud in the house as gloss stinks anyway yey
Now !!!! onto todays job strip old rusty disc off and replace
HA!! never that simple at all
OSF - wheel bearing installed with a chisel and tighter than me and thats saying something
NSF - wheel bearing had 2x hub seals fitted one to the front of the hub in-front of the bearing and the 2nd on the inside like normal wheel bearing has ate half the front seal and is totally US
OSR - wheel bearing is installed correctly and well lubricated also a Timken's part YEY
NSR - Wheel Bearing was that tight I had to use a 6ft bar to undo the adjuster nut yes the adjuster nut that is supposed to be 61nm back it off 90 and do it up to 4nm yes 4 not 400 just 4nm thanks
not only has it cooked the bearing but its totally destroyed the stub also I was less than amused retired to my man cave to calm down
it does look nice sadly staying on its stands another week at least
yes the Panhard rod bolt Is loose I am waiting on a new one I damaged that one and don't feel its serviceable
so lessons learned today
1 using a chisel to do a wheel bearing adjuster nut and lock nut up isn't only bad practice but dangerous at Best Buy the £3 tool !!!
2 some people should not be aloud to have tools not even the plastic ones toys R us sell (sold)
3 Always assume the worst and if you need to remove a part to replace another just buy them because god knows some clown would of killed the original one anyway
on the upside my power steering works a charm now and no more Leakes also managed to stick up the fuel system so its now all sorted
boot floor to be riv-nutted in and rear driers quarter to be put back on properly then seats door seals
4 wheel bearings and mot that should reveal a list of what I have forgotten
she is nearly "finished" I mean road worthy finished may never actually happen
cheers and night guys
PS currently the wife drives a 2002 TD4 Freelander (got her out of that god awful zafira last year) we paid 480 with 3 days mot bit of welding and a couple Flexi pipes and she was golden its now done 51k in our ownership in 8 months its fair past its best but its still going now my mrs has been driving 2 years something nicer is on its way to us
we need bigger as baby number 2 has a nice massive new pram that does not fit in the Freelander with the seats up so we are on the hunt for a facelift TD5 disco 2 auto full leather electric etc etc as our new family waggon must be auto as she is short and can't reach the clutch in my mates td5 because of bump hitting the steering wheel
