Stupid question but it doesnt take much to get me confused these days and Im working on a few things at once....so , excuses aside ....

...the Kart has started chucking out black smoke on acceleration , not the sort that you can clear out with a bit of revving . Usually I would say "easy! overfuelling " but with this being EDC Im not so sure .

The EGR isnt blanked as I have never been able to get the damn thing apart (a first on the 6 plus discos I have owned and numerous others worked on) and further to that the air cleaner box is replaced by a boy racer cone job to allow the fit of a second battery .

So ....EGR ? EDC fault (no , really ? never !) ? MAF problem ? Sticky 'jectors (have run the tank nearly empty a few times of late and theres all sorts of horror lurking down there) ? Or what ?

Wurzel aznt got iz thinking 'ead on , Aunt Sally ...do 'ee give us zum 'elp

hello mr shocker ,you could start with simple stuff ,try it with intake pipe off turo ,check intercooler hoses expand when revved ,disconnect vac pipe to egr (although i would expect rough running and dirty smoke if stuck open)

Maybe obvious, but have you tried fuel additive in an attempt to clean the injectors in case they are fouled?
Gareth

Thanks GFJ , obvious but relevent .... I shall do the ol' "filter fulla naptha" routine , see if that yields results. :)

JM ! Hello again , old friend , good to see you still here .:)

....as you say , the simple stuff , but my addled brain has been overlooking the obvious . My money is on a stuck EGR , with the added factor that there is NO vacuum in the line due to the boy racer cone replacing the airbox and me never getting round to gluing the pipe into the go-faster filter .

Should really buy some more oxygen and cook the EGR bolts off , get it sorted once and for all . Mind you , is this covered by the new MOT regs ? Im sure there is another thread about it but havent had time to look yet ... I know that de cats are no longer de rigeur , viz a vis the ministry .....

Mines always given a nice cloud of black smoke when booted, especially when cool - not cold - I respect the old girl too much for that!...

Right , this one had some attention today . Since I had no assistant there was only so much I could do , cant rev it myself and check hoses cos its EDC , however , took the boy racer filter off for comparison as the engine feels strangled and loses power on hills - slight difference but not much . Visual and fingertip inspection of hoses says they are fair , not great but good enough . Blocked air intake at MAF with hand and all hoses constricted .

Had the fuel filter off , was full of milky opaque fuel . Filled with naptha and fired up again . Took it out for drive and once it was warmed up took note of smoke in mirror , constant white then black when turbo goes into boost , power dies on hills with constant black smoke .

Now , if it was fuel blockage in lines or sedimentor one would think it would underfuel , and the black smoke says OVER fuel , to me anyway . Still feels strangled , even driving with the air filter off .

Cannot get the EGR bolts off , any of them . Now I remember why this one never got de EGR'd ! Looks like I will have to weld a disc into the metal hose section .

Will try JMs other suggestions tomorrow in the light , but in the meantime , any comments ? Ideas ?

Oh , and its always had the vac pipe off the valve , ever since the second battery went in .Put it on the other day but since there is no vacuum source I shouldnt think it would make a difference .

black smoke is fuel burned with not enough air ,also worth checking pump timing through front inspection plate ,tappets/push rods etc

Hadnt looked at it that way round ! Always thought along the lines of too much fuel instead of the lack of air ....what would cause this to happen so suddenly ? Hose delams ? The one to the bottom of the intercooler isnt great as it has had the fallout of a PAS hose problem dripping on it....or MAF problem ? Worth trying a known working MAF box on there ?

This has come at a really bad time ....dont they always ! Dads had a stroke , I moved away from the farm because he wanted me out ....now I have to drive there every day and this motor is the only one on the road .

could be head gasket or turbo on way, as white with black when booted, white- turbo gone black- over fuelling as not enough air beeing drawn thwough turbo,(seen this wiht a mondeo belonging a taxi driver) or if head white- water in cylinder, black when booted as not burning properly due to water??
hope this helps

Dyte - different vehicle , I have 4 D1s at the moment .

DM , "if head white- water in cylinder, black when booted as not burning properly due to water" ......that sounds more like it to me , mate . Funny , I was saying that this one was about due for a headgasket blow last week . Do we pick up on subconcious signals and make these comments , like "its ages since I had a cold !" ....and then going down with flu the next day ?

Ah ha should have read your sig soz

I'd still double check turbo and an easy way to check for water in exhaust is hold a mirror up against " white smoke" from exhaust and see if u get much condensation :)

Since the white showed up so much when I ran it in the dark last night I would hazard a guess its steam . Tried running standing still with turbo disconnected from air hose - no different and turbo appears fair from what I can see without removing it , no worse than others I have seen at least .

Drove car today , 10 mile round trip that couldnt be avoided and only transport available . White / faint blue smoke all the time . Water level not dropped much when checked . At 40 mph the engine light flashes on occasionally , engine misses a beat here and there . Less black smoke on boost but I am driving it VERY gently at this point . After 5 mins the engine takes a dislike to driving under load at 25-30mph and flashes the "check engine" on randomly....but if put in to neutral runs OK , no light , no missing . Didnt like slow moving traffic , light comes on and off - OK in neutral though , seems there is a point of acceleration/load that it has no problem with but above or below ....well , it aint happy .

The naptha has helped the running , I think gummed up injectors were adding to the pot of problems .

But ...not overheating , losing oil or water in large amounts , just flashing check light and missing here and there .Starting is stuttery until it catches but as a terminally faulty EDC its never started well , even with all the fix's .

Anyone got anything to say on all this ? I would rather NOT do the head unless I have to as my hands , back and legs are no longer up to prolonged work and it takes me days to recover . And I have to work so slowly ....
