Could one of you good folk out there tell me just how easy or difficult it is to change CV joints on a Discovery 300Tdi 1995. Is it likely to be a specialist job or maybe one for the layman?

Relatively easy job just long & drawn out and incredibly greasy, make sure you order all the right bits, seals etc,one of them jobs where you are best changing your swivel ball's/bearings if they are looking tired etc........Oh and get a new brake pipe as they usualy knack when you take the calipers off.

Thanks for the reply Jason. I'm not sure its a job I would feel confident doing looking at your reply. I have difficulty in getting myself low enough to do a job like this and if it involves any length of time stuck in one position, I'm stuffed. Thankyou again.

hey Toad - from wot I remember - there are loads of landies in the Orkneys - why dont yu ask for sum help - bound to be someone that can help ya.

Yes I agree there are plenty up here. I think I've only spotted one on this site though. The nature of the place demands a lot of Landies with the main line of employment up here being farming or fishing, but I haven't come across the enthusiast type that spends a lot of time maintaining them. I think lots of them just get repaired when the break.

Thanks for your input mate.

Can you guys tell me if this is a job that needs immediate attention or whether it would be ok left for a short time. A time when I may just be able to muster some help with it.

How much noise it making?

Just when turning or in a straight line?

Are you sure you have Grease/oil in yeh swivels?

Its only happening when I turn, and not every time. When you say have you any grease/oil in my swivels are you thinking that there may be something going on in that direction instead?

CV failure is usualy due to lack of lubrication, if yours is already "clacking" on full lock it's too late.

Lubrication for yeh CV's,Swivel & bearings,is by 3 bolts on each swivel, filler at the top, level in the middle and a drain at the bottom this is either by 80/90 oil (same as in the diffs & transfer box) or has been replaced by "One shot grease" which normaly should'nt be changed unless your swivel seals are knacked then you will lose some and have to keep filling em up!

Make sense?

Jason
