I'd be prepared to pay this much for a proper rack:

Seen a few posts recently with people wanting roof racks but not wanting to pay the £400 list price for the genuine LR Expedition rack, but still wanting something good quality which will be usable. (I fall into this bracket, and I keep getting told that I should make my own, for obvious reasons)

So, after some persuading from certain people telling me that I should do it, what would people like to see on a roof rack? Ideas for fittings (waffle boards and such like), sizes and such forth.

I'd be looking at a primarily 3dr version, although would obviously be cross compatible with the 5dr, could make 2 versions with a same base chassis design and shape.

I've also put a poll up top to get a rough idea of what people would expect to pay for a proper rack that's made properly to suit us LR folk.

Cheers chaps

So does everyone :D the last new one I saw available a few weeks ago went for nearly £2k to a guy in Holland
Yip, and he's very happy with it. :D

So, Simon. Do you come to Poland and measure mine, or I need to go to U.K :D ?

I fancy a trip that way so I'll come to you, I'll bring my laptop and draw it while I'm there ;)

Good, very good :)
I see it in two versions - mini for 3dr (with their own bars like stock - look at jeeps gobi racks for inspiration) and full for 5 dr. :D

How about something like the brown church rack with as low profile as possible so we can still get under car park barriers even with a 2'' lift with extra tall AT tyres.

That seems the beauty of the low profile version of the safety devices rack, now obsolete.

That Jeep Gobi rack is a sexy rack! Problem is getting the shape of the SD rack, I'd probably just make it flat

Thats true, I've been in some fairly tight situations with my car as it is!

Yes but SD have a design right on it ;)

And would cost too much to make it like that, unless I sold like 100 of them

Oh and you know my rack wouldn't be that bad ;)

Something flat would suit me with somewhere to attatch a roller., something that sitts jn the bars rather than on them cojld also be good..

Too difficult because of the way it mounts to the bars, the mounts need to be on top of the bars to take the weight. But, a one off could be doable, would have a narrower load bay though

Well i sorta correct myself ha somethjng without the current bars(thule rack etc) needed if flush isnt doable, or flush for strength parts with the load bit part of what sits on the bars..
Slose theres loads of options really and ill be a minority with needing more of a practicle work rack than one for the expedition look.. :-[

On a 3 door would it be one that attaches to the rails or would it be an all in one design?

Will probably attach to the rails, the 3dr looks odd without them IMHO!

Queenscheese, nowt to stop taking a base design and adding bits to it for what you need, as long as the general structure is the same as the rest, can do anything you want within your budget

Ill deffo bein touch unless i get lucky on fleabay when work picks up and ive got some pennies lol and if i get rich ull have a big order lol..

What wouldsuit me best tho i posted in your woohoo thread in a link

Whatsort of cash would that be with brackets for a roller and maybe a couple of strap/tie down hoops to fit directly to the rails?

For a one off, couple of hundred quid tops, probably a chunk less, depends on the material and bending.

Could do with a big order to bring some money in :D
