just got my hands on a 93 200 tdi disco. A couple of issues, 1) when i select 2nd gear from 1st or 3rd there is some crunching, it only does this if i try and change gears quickly and if the revs are high, above 2000.
2) The heater does not work. it doesnt blow any air at all.

Any suggestions would be good

change gear slowly, it aint a ferrari.

re the heater, is any heat coming from the matrix, or is it just a blower fan problem?
the 2 things are very different.

i took it out for a run and the dial was set to blow at the highest setting but there was nothing blowing out and all the vents were open, and then all of a sudden it started blowing, after about 30 seconds it stopped again, it has not blown since. It was on the cold air setting so i dont know if the matrix is working or not.

I have tried changing into gear very slowly and it really does not like it when the revs are high. I can change into all the other gears as quickly as i can and its fine. Are there any remedies for this?

Changing gear in a LR gearbox is gentle and relaxed, get it up to speed, push the clutch and push it into gear, if your pulling and shoving then your going about it all wrong. But in your case I think the syncro/baulk ring needs replacing.

However, check your fluid levels, is there any play in your clutch pedal before it comes to any resistance. I had trouble with second in an LT77 transmission, and it turned out the push rod was slipping in the pedal arm a little before it actully did anything, so I tightened the nut up, which allowed the rod to travel further, and give a good clean gear change with out drag, then again one of your cylinders could just be away!

Re the fan; sounds like you got a pipe off!

being very new to the disco game, i swopped my series 3 i as of yet dont really know my way around it.

starting with the easy things first how would i go about refitting the pipe on the fan?

is replacing the syncro/baulk rings a major job????? and excuse my lack of knowledge but what does "then again one of your cylinders could just be away!" mean?

sounds more like an electrical problem your looking for! TRY switch on your ignition, the radio and fan should have power to them, (if the fuse is ok)
with the fan on full you should hear it blow. If not start pulling it to bits.
Start with the switch first(only because its easier to get at) but in all probability it sounds like the brushes in the fan motor. happy hunting

1st to 2nd changing in any gearbox is usually the one that has problems with the synchro ring. Changing 1 to 2 should be a two stage shift with that slight pause in the neutral section, then gentle pressure into 2nd, this will give time for revs to drop and teeth to align.

a/. It's a gearbox overhaul - so a major job.

b/. Assuming that you have checked the fluid level and bled any air out of the clutch hydraulics, you could try replacing the clutch slave & master cylinders. If these are not working properly this will highlight any synchro issues - 1&2 on the LT77 are usually the weak link, often it's not the synchro thats worn but the conical shims that set the float break up .... leading to answer a/.

Hi
I had the crunching 2nd gear problem ...changed gear oil ( ATF) and learned to change gear a little slower .....presto no crunch!
