I have an intermittent fault with my cruise control on a 1995 3.9 Disco ES auto, sometime it works fine (for a while) and other times it just won't click on, sometimes it turns itself off after a couple of miles for no apparent reason and then won't come back on again.
I asked the garage to check it out while it was in for service and they replaced the vac hoses, but it still doesn't work. I can hear a relay click in the dash when it works so guess it's an electrical fault?? Got the manual out and checked the brake switch which seemed OK but I couldn't really find any of the other bits or have much of a clue what to do with them. Any help please???

try checking the gap between the brake switch and pedal and also if the brake pedal is loose in any way, like the return spring is worn, causing the pedal to bounce.
 
AFAIK on the Disco's the cruise works off vaccum, so i would check all the vac pipes, and from what i can gather there are rather a few. Discokid had the same on mine before i bought it from him, and the vac pipe cured the problem.
 
Snap, have had the same problem for the last month and today it was fixed. I have a 98 ESV8. There is a controller in behind the glove box. My man at the garage tracked the fault to a solenoid in the controller which was randomly cutting out. Replaced the controller and hey presto goes sweet as.
 
Thanks Brett, you are a star... hopefully!! Have tried all the other stuff, vac hoses, brake pedal switch, speed sensor... was convinced it would be a relay of some sort but did not know where to look next, I will whip the glove box out at the weekend and take a look.

Jaz, not a problem, will talk to my mechanic and get the part number, will talk next few days.

Jaz, bad news mate. Cruzin home on Friday nite and the bloody cruise control dropped out. Hit reset and tried again but getting lots of clicking from 'the controller' behind the glovebox so it's back to the garage. Has run sweet for 3 weeks. Will keep you posted.

I bet you laughed!!!! What a bummer!!! I dropped the glove box and found a whole bunch of relays so I swapped all the ones over that were the same (4 green ones and 2 yellow ones), I think it is a little better but that is probably me just being optimistic!! Still not reliable though by a long way. Seems to be better when car is cold e.g. first thing in the mornings?? But anyway... I will take another look in the near future, have to fit new brake pipes (long ones), shocks, springs, pads and disks for my entertainment today... and probably tomorrow... Keep me informed of your findings ref. the cruize

When I traced the vacuum lines I found minute cracks in 3 of the pipes, basically perished rubber. Swift replacement found the problem solved and the cruise con working 100% (so far!!!) reliably. Figured it out by reading back through these posts, so thanks to all who stuck in their two peneth (or cents, whichever is good?).

I have found that grandads walking stick WITH rubber end gives around 80mph in top where as without gives just above 70. It is most reliable in use and hasn't faild once!
