Have a 2.5na 90
On start up she smokes white smoke maybe slight blue but within 30seconds she's clear so didn't think anything to worry about. Got home tonight and the bonnet had popped up so I opened it to see if anything blocking it to find the oil fill cap had popped off and oil had sprayed on bonnet and engine. Could this have happened along with the smoke and actually be an issue? Any ideas would be great searched around but no one seems to have had that combination it pulls fine drives fine comes up to temp fine etc

it's called Crankcase pressurisation. do a searxh for that! it's usually worn bores/piston rings. or blocked oil pickup

Sounds like it is a big job! Worn rings or could be a crack in the case! Just when I thought it would be sorted! How would I find these things out as in loosing my patients with it! It runs fine etc yet does what is disribed most people are saying the engines ****ed! What's your view
Chaps

Ring/bore wear can be tested by pressure or leak-down testing.

Perhaps a valve fault? Because engine was hydrolocked would possible valve/pushrod damage resulting in poor valve sealing result in pressure leaking and burning oil from rockers?

He got water in it,most likley bent
connecting rod /cracked piston .

Bent con rod would make a racket. cracked piston is possible but is usuallyu accompanied by loss of power.

Far more likely to be old age. or even HGF. with compression gasses been forced back down an oilway.

My td 90 did it all the time I had her. (2 years) and still towed a 5 berth caravan & both of em were fully loaded with all me worldly possesions. From Hull to Somerset. without missing a beat.

I stuck the breather pipe into the chassis and let the oil protect the chassis leg from rusting away. (silver lining an all that) :D

The engine runs ace it's actually quieter then before it's also only just started! Gonna gir her a oil change and a flush threw so hopefully that will help

sorry but dont kid yourself. im just fitting my third engine in the 90, the first one did what you describe so i bought another. the second was the same so i ran two swirl pots and two breathers, the las time out every set of traffic lights i stoped at people moved out the way cos they thought it was on fire. Still runs well. Ive spent the last week rebuilding my third engine with new crank shells, big ends, piston rings etc so hopefully it will last a little longer, so far im averaging an engine per year lol

can this oil breather jobbie be done with a series 3 derv engine without too much risk of destruction or is it not advisable

So by sounds of it my engines shot and I choose weather to run it as is or change it Basicly!
My 19j was still running well but puffing from the cap like Thomas the Tank engine!Took head off and all 4 pistons cracked two all the way across.Amazing.

Not as amazing as a VW beetle i looked at for a green jacket years ago.
It was running lumpy, turned out the crankshaft had sheared on the centre journal

Gonna have to have a look into this!! Maybe a
Simple fix could be an engine!! ****ed
Me right off for my Sunday off!

Dont suppose you have topped the oil up recently.

My old 90 did this to me one day, what a mess, scared me to death. My dad, who was a mechanic, discovered I had topped it up from a can he had in the garage. Apparently it was the wrong stuff. He changed the oil and it ran another 50,000 miles without ever happening again.

I only remember because of the bollocking I got from him

Well just for an update turns out it prob wasn't pushed down properly! Done 20 miles without anything moving so false alarm
