Hi all,

Hello I am new to this forum and I need help please.

I have a Landrover Defender 90 TD5 (x reg) and I have had it for about 1 and a half years. It has recently decided to do some silly things.

First of all it began shaking at about 45mph and the whole Landy begins to shake but it then goes away after about 55mph. The prop shafts seem ok but don't know what else to look at?

The Landy has also now begun to make a clunk / rattle when changing gear generally. It seems to me that the noise isn't as bad or frequent when just starting it up at the beginning of the day or after a period of rest. This is more concerning to me than the shaking.

I will be going to a garage with the issues but wondered if you guys could suggest anything I could check beforehand? My other half has had Landys before but I am a female owner with no mechanical experience.

Thanks all :)

Shaking could be something like the panhard rod, radius arm bushes etc...

Get under it with a crow bar or something and check for play, get someone to rock the landy side to side as you watch the panhard rod etc.

Where does the clunk sound like it is coming from, I won't even start on this until I have a rough area to work with.

Is there any slack in the drivetrain?

When you press the loud pedal, does it clunk then?

Do you get what seems like clutch slip/high revving when going up a hill or when the engine is under strain?

Could it be the transfer box? Might starts to whine at 50mph but goes away a little if I accelerate - the noise sounds like it's coming from just behind the cubby box. Also makes a clunk on power-take up.

It clunks sometimes when I press the accelerator but no high revving and was pulling trailer the other week fine.

Problem gets worse the more I drive but the way it drives is no different at all.

It doesn't whine it kind of clunks and creaks but that doesn't go away. The shaking goes away above 50mph. It doesn't clunk when I ask for more power.

I'm sticking with Grimmer and going for the UJs at the Mid/rear!! Get your wheel balancing checked!!!

im with the lads ujs

sounds like slack in the drive train to me.
When you put your foot on the accelerator the engine responds and sends drive all the way to the wheels. If there is a little play in any of the components then there is going to be a 'clunk' when metal touches metal and force is connected again.

Could be anywhere from the transfer box to the cv joint.

Have you grabbed the props and twisted them by hand? how much movement is there?

I would start by taking a prop off and sticking the box in diff lock and going for a drive. If its still there then re fit prop and take off other end.

I had a similar issue earlier in the year and it turned out to be a stub axle that was worn out.

Let us know how you get on

If it is your UJs ...

make sure you get the right replacements ...

You have an X-reg, (2000), and in 2000/2001 they changed the yolk size ...

Distance across faces of joint: 75mm (2.95") -

Distance across faces of joint: 93mm (3.66") -

I think yours should be the 75mm ones ...
