Hi everyone

When my P38 (2.5 Diesel 2001) is cold it is embarrassingly slow and despite the revs wont break 20MPH or thereabouts....

Is there a crawler mode before the vehicle warms up?

Thanks

Ash

There must be something wrong with it. I would start by getting it on diagnostics and seeing if anything looks off. If you put your location in your profile there may be someone near who can take a look at it.

No doubt someone more knowledgeable will come along and give you an answer soon though.

My guess is the MAP sensor pipe is split/blocked/come off....

The MAP sensor is located on the top of the fuel filter bowl under the bonnet....there should be a little pipe from that to under the intake manifold around cylinder 5/6...this little gizmo tells the Engine ECU the Manifold Pressure and is used for fueling information, with this disconnected you will get little oommph frm the engine!

If this is secure and you are still struggling, start looking at the Turbo hoses, the intercooler and on a 2001 model, check the EGR valve isn't gunked up causing issues!

They are slow when cold, but that is not normal, follow Saint V8's advice above, check the pipe is not split or perished and that the spigot the pipe connects to in the manifold is not blocked.

Hi Gents

Many thanks for the replies.

Saint, all that is ok, it's just really when it first starts in the morning when it's cold, other wise it runs ok.

Steve did put it on his diagnostic to sort an unrelated problem and he cast his eye over the general stats and didn't flag anything, but the car was warm at the time.

Could be all sorts of things in that case like a sensor not working when cold, needs diagnostics. Having said that, they are limited when cold.

Ah..... I see

Which sensor might that be Keith, I did buy a water temperature sensor during the refurb but didn't fit it.......

It's for about 2 miles or so, is that what you mean by "limited" it kinda revs but no real speed increase

It's just come back from a specialist (radius arm bushes) who used it to commute and he didn't comment on it, so perhaps it's normal but doesn't seem right to me.

Thanks Keith

If it revs with no speed increase, I'd be looking at the auto box oil, should be changed along with the filter every 24K miles.
Both my manual Transit and auto P38 struggle up the hill from my house in the cold, it's normal. My Toyota Celica petrol auto was speed limited when cold and the shifts were also held in lower gears.

Funnily enough this morning it was ok........ so maybe i am overstating

Now I've just discovered rear offside brake is binding!!

Does it ever end!! (rhetorical question)

Thanks

Binding brakes will produce exactly your symptoms.
