Hello.

I fitted a new timing belt to a Disco 200tdi yesterday - all went swimmingly

But when I came to refit the crankshaft pulley damper I noticed that the rubber part is very perished and falling apart. Presumably this is bad and it'll need replacing.

I've had a quick search online - LRSeries want £125 for a new one! The pattern part is £44, but I'm always rather reluctant to use pattern parts unless I'm sure the quality is going to be okay.

Any advice? I really could do without the extra expense at the moment!

Use the pattern part.
It won't be a problem.

These things don't do a lot, and are more for theory than any real effect.

They are not to make the engine run smoother for the comfort of your arse. They are there to act like little to and fro flywheels to smooth out the torsional effects of the cylinders firing one after the other and thus twisting the crnakshaft every time. In THEORY this should extend the life of the crankshaft before it fails from too many TWIST cycles. Don't worry about it. Fit a pattern part. Make sure it is TIGHT and fit a new Woodruff key if the old one shows ANY signs of being battered about.
