aa said crankshaft is broken any ideas maybe new engine req trying to keep cost low
Not really familiar with the later LR engines.
Under what conditions did the crankshaft break?
I have read that there are bearing problems in some later engines, but unless it is a compound crank break it should be possible to put in a new crank and new bearings and have a runner again.
Are you in a position to carry out the job yourself, tools, know how, facility, etc?
Unfortunately these days the cost of labour means that many fixable vehicles are scrapped for very little in damage, I own a D1, but last year came across a Toyota RV6 Forerunner that had a broken conrod to number 6 cylinder from being hydrauliced in a river crossing, because the potential labour cost to the owner to have it fixed was so great I bought it for the value of the tyres and rims, about $200 Australian, and for minimal outlay and a bit of time I now have a great 4x4 wagon to supplement the Disco.
Hope for the best.

Broken cranks in engines (not specifying this engun but a lot of engun) often result in spun bearings and stuffed bearing bores, so don't bank on being able to take it apart and put a new crank and bearings in

mine did the same a few years back. 2011 ish when the landy was 4 yrs old.

Main bearings spun and blocked off the oil way and seized solid almost instantly snapping the crank.
Mine needed a replacement short Block and 2 cylinder heads.

If it happened again now I'd be looking for a jag (same engine)in a breakers or a recon motor. They do offer new bearings etc now but I'd only go down that route if it's a big end knock.A snapped crank will be a uneconomical repair imo

Yes mate you are sort of right but unless you have a look you don't know to what extent things are damaged, most workshops would not bother pulling apart to look, this guy sounds like he can't afford to scrap his car so I feel it is wise to check to see what can be recovered. The saying you can't make a silk purse etc,etc applies, why spend a whole heap of money on a complete new or even used engine if, for the price of a second hand crank and some bearings the engine can be recovered. I guess it all comes down to abilities and labour costs.
My Toyota engine was recovered for $75 for a second hand conrod and piston and a new LH head gasket, $40 on ebay, a fair few hours of hard work by me, bit I have little else to do these days, it may not run as a new one may have but it runs reliably

Hi I have a discovery 3 2008 with a seized engine. I contact Land Rover to be told the vehicle has high mileage at 128K and they think I have had my moneys worth out of the vehicle so no assistance from land rover.
They also said they have not seen many engines seized but at £4,200 for a engine plus fitting i am not surprized.
I have got a domain, LandRoverSeizedEngine.com and will create a web page where a document can be download and details like vin no. , year problem etc are sent back to me and i will create a list of the info sent back and give it to land rover at a show.
What do you think?

I wouldn' hold your breath. I know of a few that have ended up shagged due to cranks snapping, but ends going or the oil pump casing breaking and wrecking the motor.
Land rover poo poo'd them all.

At the moment we are going to LR individaly. If we can get 500 plus details, we can go back to them united. Maybe get Watchdog involved.I going to strip mine down anyway and get receipts for any parts i buy. Its worth a try.
