Because of the Land Rover desease , I couldn´t manage to buy a "ordinary" car as family transport (already have a defender 130) , I just had to buy a P38-98.Diesel
Exept for the eas(of course) that broke after my first week of owning it , It´s very hard to start up 8?10 times, I´ve read that the most common cause of this is the "hot start" BMW thought was a good idea !!
Is this the most likely cause ? and what´s the fix ?
Are there any other wellknown reasons to this phenomena ??

If you are trying to start after the 'glow plug' light on the dash goes out, could mean the glow plugs need looking at.

If you are trying to start when the engine is warm then it might be the 'hot start'. I think you can get a unit on ebay that bypasses the hot start. However, there will be somebody along soon who knows more than I do;)

Yupp , I saw the "bypass" device the other day on e-bay , and I will have someone look at the glow plugs , but , when it´s hot as in H..l as it is at the moment here in Southern Sweden , wouldn´t it start anyway , like the td 5 ??
Anyway , when (if;) ) I get the eas and Engine "problems" fixed , I will be driving around like a lordin and outside Malmö :car:

If the engine is cold enough for the glow plug light to come on and it doesn't start, the glow plugs are shot. If the light doesn't come on and doesn't start your fuel pump needs timing which is the cause for the "hot start" problem.

The bodge is to fit a hot start kit (if you do, make sure you get one with a timed relay, otherwise you'll always run rich). The correct fix is to get the fuel pump serviced. I'm not sure if LR can do this as I am lead to believe they will remove it from your vehicle, give it to BMW to fix and then refit it, charging you lots labour for your troubles. You will probably be better phoning a local BMW specialist to see if they can do the work.

Thank´s Bix , will have the plugs checked/changed asap. ,will have the eas in working order first of all , waiting for a gadget to get it out of" max 55 km/h" mode and try to find out why the bast..d failed .

Before you spend fortunes on your poor starting have you checked your injector leak-off pipes for leakage and your in-tank pump?

nope , i Think I´ll have to ask my local garage to go thru`the Engine , fuel ,and glow system , would be nice to know that my "new" rr will start properly when it turns Cold in Sweeeden :)

Checking the leak-off pipes is only a matter of looking for leakage or seepage whilst the engine is running. Replacing them is a (careful) pull off, push on job. You can buy the stuff and just cut off what you need.
Checking the in-tank pump is only pulling the clear pipe off under the bonnet and collecting and measuring the diesel after a few seconds of cranking a cold engine. See previous posts by Wammers for precise measurements.
O.K. getting to the glow plugs means taking the inlet manifold off (it's quicker and simpler) but that's hardly rocket science and a new set of GOOD glow plugs (Delphi are OEM) is almost always a good idea.
