well guys, had a spare 15 mins today and did the starter thing and much to my supruse it came undone!!!
the damper came off in my hand with no problems.

thanks to you 2 locals for offering support. im also available to help any of you guys with stuff if required.

now onto next problem i came up against before i had to dash of to do a job. the timing case has a stud through it at top of water pump. some idiot has sheared it off at some point and its holding case on so looks like im gunna have to drill it out and re tap it.

every days a learning day. (tho just some learn quicker than others)

cant picture the stud- and cant work out how a sheared stud still holds summat on? any chance of a pic?
thought about a stud extractor?

il'l try get a pic mate, none showing to get stud extractor on its flush with front of case. its the only thing that can be holding it. case has come loose in palces but solid near the sheared stud. its not a problem i will drill it out and re thread it and make a new stud on the laithe. just time thats the problem, been working alot of hours and im flying to spain next wednesday for a week.

you know these covers are dowled?
i reckon you've missed a bolt.

didnt know they were dowled no, and defo not missed a bolt. been round the thing 10 times to double check. must be the dowels holding it. didnt wanna pull to hard and break it with it only being cast ally.

The corrosion will lock it in place and you cant rotate the cover at all because of the dowels. Its a case of drilling it out - and its a long stud too all the back to the block :(.

On mine it was possible to get something behind the timing cover and force it off. Take care not to buckle the cover tho.

gently work your way round it with levers, if it shows signs of comin off you've not missed a bolt. it should come over the sheard off stud leaving some to get hold of to try and work it out.
still cant see jow the sheard stud will hold it.
if it dont show signs of comin off, its a bolt thats bin missed.

tiz easy - a steel bolt inside an aluminium housing with coolant acting as an electrolytic catalyst. Corrosion will take place on both components until the corrosion "welds" the two pieces together.

When two or more different sorts of metal come into contact in the presence of an electrolyte a galvanic couple is set up as different metals have different electrode potentials. The electrolyte provides a means for ion migration whereby metallic ions can move from the anode to the cathode. This leads to the anodic metal corroding more quickly than it otherwise would; the corrosion of the cathodic metal is retarded even to the point of stopping. The presence of electrolyte and a conducting path between the metals may cause corrosion where otherwise neither metal alone would have corroded.

Aluminium and Mild steel are very closely associated in the the galvanic scale and will tend to actively corrode each other, rather than one be protected by the corrosion of the other.

oh. need to read that when i'm half sober!

doesent corrosion reduce something? (it does with my body panels to steel....)
its still a non positive locking action and should break the corrosion build up and come off.

i still stand by a missed bolt or not trying hard enough!
(in the nicest possible way!)

still available to pop over if you want?

well all sorted boys, had an hour today, got the ally casing slightly warm where broken stud was and welded a nut onto the bit that was left and it came out no probs. then with a few gentl taps with plastic hammer cover came off, changed belt. gunna nip to simonites in morning for new cover gasket and get it built back up tommorow.

It pays to search the forum...

4 hours with breaker bars, big hammers, a compressor and gun and lots of lost flesh...

2 mins searching on here and the blooming pulley bolt is off in 5mins!

Just in time too... cam belt is delaminating due to leaking pump seal coating it in biodiesel... (main reason for this job). New vitron seal to replace and a new belt too!

Do you have the part number for the seal in viton, just so I can get one in n ready
cheers-Also remember to loctite that bolt back on when ur done

I just called Dieselbob. He knew which part! his number is... 01254 878 582 and press 6 for bob... take no notice of the website 'we don't send individual seals' it was just under £15 inc vat and post.
