Afternoon All - Have changed a few filters in my 2004 Freelander TD4 and just about to get around to changing the crank case filter but have a small issue with the housing. Two of the screws have the thread gone and the hex key sockets just twist. Any thoughts?

Was hesitant to drill to release but exhausted a few options already and held off from just ploughing ahead with a wrench to make it worse. Pic Attached.

Is it the thread that has gone and it just turns, or is it the hex shape that has rounded and the key turns and does nothing??

If the latter a slotted screwdriver forced in across the corners should loosen it.
If the former then grips and lift as you turn or, as you say, drill head but then you may end up stuck with a bit in the socket end of the fixing.

Thanks Andy. It's a case of the hex bolt just rotates as the head has rounded completely. I'll keep the thread updated for others (if unfortunate enough to have the issue).Should be having another crack at once back at home after the NY. Did think a chisel to create a groove for a flat head similar to your suggestion should do...!

Yes or a large screw extractor which has a reverse thread on it so that when you unscrew the bolt the extractor tightens into the fixing.

The nut part is only held in plastic so I wouldn't chisel.
As above, reverse drill/extractor.
Can you get mole grips on it at all, I know it is deep down but just a little turn would help

All sorted - thanks for the thoughts. Went down the reverse drill bit route. Took a few pilot holes but all sorted and got the BMW oil filter in!
