Hi, I am knew here so hello everyone. I am starting to get a few problems with my 1999 Freelander 1.8i. So I thought I better start looking up a few things to help me along the way.

This problem just happened after quite a rigorous MOT. The casing just in front of the main drive shaft (looks to me like the gear box) has totally cracked and broken, so when I move the car there is a husge grinding noise.

Firstly, is it the gear box or somethign I have read, the IRD.
How hard is this to change and how long would it take a mechanic to do the work.

And finally, do you think the MOT could have caused this, with rigorous acceleration and breaking in reverse and forward gears.

Any help appreciated

twas it ok before the mot ? i mean its not summit that yer wouldnt notice. . .sure they didnt drop it on summit :mad:

If it's a grinding sound (metal on metal) when you drive the vehicle and you can still change gears etc... it might be the IRD/transfer box.

If so you could be looking at a bill for a £1000 +, a recon'ed transfer box is about £800 quid alone. My Freelander (2000 model with 74,000 on the clock) is in at the moment having the transfer box replaced and I've been told they're estimating 4 hours worth of work. Not too bad until you start paying Main dealer labour rates :( .
 
Yes - I can change gears OK but it is making a right noise, plus I can see it is cracked in two and I can see theinternal workings of the unit. So if it is the IRD that connects directly to the drive shaft then it must be the IRD.

How can it just crack open, my wife drove it out of the drive, when to pull away and bang, the noise started.

So a 1000 pounds - something I could have done with out. This Freelander has cost me a fortune so far ;o(
 
Thanks for that - I have contacted them and got a good shipping price even to France (where I am).
So, how hard is it to change the VCU and the IRD - or is it a specialist job.
 
Time needed to change a VCU? You can do that during your coffee break... now, as regards an IRD just don't go making too many plans for the next couple of days! :eek:
