Hello All,

2004 TD5 Landmark, 153k miles. While searching for a small engine oil leak, I checked the engine oil level, OK and has never risen on the dipstick, but this time the filler cap smelled of diesel, although the dipstick didn't. When I last changed the oil, 3k miles ago, the drained oil smelled mildly of kerosene, but not diesel.

So, I am assuming that diesel is getting into the sump is at exactly the same rate that it is leaking from the small oil leak, so I'll change the injector seals. There is no record of them having been changed.

I thought that while the injectors are out I'd use a crack detector on the injector pockets just to put my mind at rest (or not:eek:), but I've never used one before so I'm asking for your opinion. I was thinking of getting this one, https://www.gas-uk.co.uk/crack-detection-spray-set.html

Am I completely wrong, or is it as good as anything else?

As someone who has used this process many times in my dim and distant past as a welder, I’m not sure it would work in this type of use given the amount of oil and contamination around an engine. It might though if it’s thoroughly cleaned.

Thank you. I had wondered how clean the area would need to be.

I may give it a go as an experiment as the kit is cheap enough!
 
it needs to be very clean, maybe use a small steam cleaner, then dry if , hair dryer, apply the cleaner then the colour, wait the recommended time, apply the white, if there is a crack the white dry powder pull the red dye out of the crack

Thank you. This will be an interesting experiment. At least the pockets seem to crack at around the same place so I know where to look hardest!
