Adrian Flux Insurance - Click Here to get a quote!
Just got through my renewal with Adrian Flux - a pleasing £611.

But......

On checking with the rep on the phone, that doesn’t cover off-road driving. The concession he arranged with the underwriters was that it would cover green-laning. As far as I’m aware, green lanes are considered part of the public highway. And also, as far as I’m aware, they only apply in England and Wales, not Scotland where I live.

Basically, if I take my car to an off-road site, I’m not covered.

I thought that was the sort of thing that AF covered? If not, I can get a few hundred off the premium by going to a bog-standard comparison site.

Anyone got suggestions for the cover?

Hi Alastair,

Thanks for the post and that is correct. Whilst we do provide cover for Green Laning as these fall under the road traffic act, any other form of activities off-road aren't covered. For example the 'pay and play' style days the insurers can't reasonably be expected to cover any accidental damage to a 4x4 when they are put through rigorous use.
This will be the case across most insurers and in particular non-specialist ones on comparison websites. If I can be of further assistance please let me know.

Regards,

Dan

I can’t speak for the insurers. But I suspect “off road” insurance would be similar in nature to track insurance. And would be something specialist just for the activity and unlikely to cover road use.

Depending on what you are wanting covered it may be costly or have a hefty excess payment.

For any legitimate event the event organiser should be providing liability insurance.

I thought that having specialist insures like Adrian Flux was so that off-road driving would be covered. Guess not. I'll need to look elsewhere.

I think you won’t find it elsewhere. I’m not defending Adrian Flux. But specialising in certain types of vehciles such as 4x4’s, classics, vintage, modified or high performance. Doesn’t mean they offer insurance for other types of use.

You are after ‘specialist insurance’ cover. Rather than ‘specialist Vehcile’ type cover.

As said. Track days are a great example. If you have a Caterham and want cover for while you are on the race track in case you stuff it into a barrier. You’ll typically need cover specifically for this which will be above and beyond cover for driving on the road. Ie a different policy.

Off roading will be the same thing.

Any form of track/pay & play needs different insurance cover.
Yep flux will cover you for green laning as these are public rights of way. They won't cover you to plant your motor in the deepest puddle & then get winched into pieces.

If I got to an event this would be organised by the MSA & would provide the liability insurance. But if I trashed my comper they won't pay out, some other nice company will pay as it was on a race car policy.
I have seen too many accidents not to have some form of insurance for fast motorsport.

Green lanes don't apply north of the border, so doesn't really help me :(

That’s not really the fault of the insurance though. Normal motor car insurance covers you when driving on public highways which green lanes are. And for certain types of private property open to public access, eg a supermarket car park. Although the cover may be limited for the later depending on the situation and claim.

For use on closed private ground, be it in a field, race track or other motor sports you will normally need some very specific insurance. I assume when you “off road” in Scotland it is some kind of private land?

But you will be covered to drive them in England, which is not actually that far away from you.

For the purposes of insurance cover, pay and play is considered the same as competitions, which are specifically excluded from most road insurance. And this is clearly stated on the policy documentation.

I seem to remember signing a waiver form the last time I went to a pay and play acknowledging that I wouldn't have insurance which was why my 16 year old son was allowed to drive around ..
