I ordered some rivnuts from Craddocks thinking they were the right parts but I need 3 of these to fit my rear mudflaps to the chasis of my 90 - could someone tell me what they are called or let me have a PN please?

I think they're called captive bolts or something like that as I purchased some for my Landy a few years back.
 
Very similar to rivnuts, but ya don't need the tool to fit them ..

Rivnuts are probably much cheaper though and made of aluminium so won't rust..
 
You dont actually need the special tool for rivnuts but its probably better to use it. To do it without the tool put the rivnut in the hole and put a bolt with a nut on it in the rivnut (so the nut and bolthead are on the same side. Holding the bolt with a tommy bar or spanner to stop it turning (tommy bars better as its easier to keep things straight), turn the nut with a spanner so it tightens against the rivnut. Its easier with 2 people, 1 holding the tommy bar and one using the spanner Doing this bulges the rivnut out as it would with the special tool. This was how I put a new rivnut in my bulkhead for the fuel filter bracket to go on.

Thanks I have a rivnut tool and a whole range of sizes but all too small for the haxagional holes in the rear crossmember... so i am a bit stuck?
 
Thanks - I have rivnuts but they are all circular - the chasis holes are hexagional?

You could always run a drill through the holes to make them round to fit the rivnuts you have? Quicker than using a round file :)

Could you not use standard nut and bolt or is access too difficult? This is how it is on my series 3 but dont know how different it is on a defender

Did think about that but reaming out will mean that even my M8s will be to small and access fpor a normal M6 long bolt is not possible as you cannot get into the middle of the cross member...
