My first post, please be gentle. I bought a J Reg 90 last year, have been slowly upgrading when money permits, just had first service and MOT, garage have advised the bulkhead is in bad way, and suggest I start thinking about replacing within next 12 months. I am no mechanic, can you advise on likely cost for new galvanised bulkhead (ashtree?) painting and fitment. Also if anyone can recommend a company in the South / South West to carry out the work I'd be grateful. Many thanks.

If you go down the galv route from the likes of Ashtree then you are looking at £1K for the bulkhead plus fitting & ancillary parts / painting etc (there are lots of parts that can be replaced with ease while the bulkhead is off so it makes sense to do them). Any garage isn't going to leave you with a bill of under £1.5-£2K and possibly significantly more.
I just had mine galvanised (cost about £70 inc VAT) but I did all the work myself and my bulkhead was in perfect condition to start with. While I was doing it I also fitted a new clutch, heater, wiper-motor, Raptor dash and lots of new wiring as I wanted to make the most of the vehicle being off the road and all that unrestricted access.

You say you are in the South / SouthWest.
Give Andover LandRover a call, they will give you a price for fitting one.

As above. I bought a galv bulkhead from Ashtree and had them spray it for me. I think it cost about £1,200. Then fitting on top which might have been a similar price again.

Thanks for information, who did you get to fit it for you, and how recently was it done?

If you've got the room, I'd do it yourself. It's not a complicated job, just lots to take off, and then put back on again.

One of the parts of owning a landy, is getting your hands dirty and doing some (or all) the work yourself.

It was about 3 yrs ago and I used Paul Marsden who works in the unit next door to Richards Chassis on Mexborough Rotherham. He did my chassis swap at the same time. He did an excellent job and I highly recommend him. I have a thread on here somewhere detailing the process.

Found it....

If you have the room, purchase a solid used one and spend a little time stripping it down and becoming familiar with what goes where and how. Restore it, then strip your old one down and replace.

Good luck!!

With personal experience I can say it cost me two girl friends, 4 liters of sweat, 2 liters of blood and about £1k. But the gains have far out weigh the cost, well at least the first item on the list........
