I was gobsmacked when on my last fill up for my TD4, I vowed to start using quality diesel instead of the standard.

I was amazed at the price difference and just hope that the difference is reflected big time in how the engine runs.

£1.06.9 for standard diesel.
£1.21.9 for Supreme diesel.

This was from an Esso station.

I am not sure I will continue with this expensive stuff unless there is an obvious difference to the way the engine runs.

£1.10 per liter for standard texaco and add 50ml of Millers ecomax. Works out around £1.15 per liter.
Works wonders.

I use shell V Power all the time now It's 124.9 pence pL at the moment. I put £20 worth in every week. Every 4th week I'll put in a pot of Comma Diesel Magic. This has kept my TD4 running sweet.

I use v power every other tank full and it really runs great and better economy not a lot but it is there and I filled up sunday but did not take much notice how much it was

I've only ever used the standard stuff: do you think it's worth the premium?

Some suggest a difference in running and fuel consumption. I haven't done the back to back tests to see - has anyone here?

I know from experience that supermarket diesel is not good.
I assume bog standard non supermarket is perfectly adequate.

Budget diesel is definitely bad for TD4 injectors. This is why I now only use V Power. It definitely makes the engine smoother and maybe even slightly better on fuel, not that I'm to bothered about that.

Mine's mostly fed on Tesco's finest too - either that or one of the branded fuel stations (what ever is available, if I am honest). Injectors had to be rebuilt about 3 years ago thanks to spectacular leak back (they all do that sir). No idea whether the quality of the fuel is a factor in injector longevity?

I thought supermarkets only did one type of diesel???
I think they are called City Diesel. They do sell two types of petrol though. I use the City Diesel mainly out of personal funds not being that great as a homecarer. Granted I could save up for a better version of diesel but really LandRover should declare in their pamphlets only main dealers for fuel. As I suspect with world diesel being varied in grade of quality you use what you find works.

I dont think it makes alot of difference whether from supermarket
or other premium brand.
just dont run it right to the red zone and never to virtual empty
always fill up at the first mark on gauge
caus the injectors get full of **** from low tank
and fail over time, plus the fuel pump has to work twice as hard
but i did find this out the hard way after breaking down
at temp lights in road works and all hell breaking loose behind me arrrrrr
caus my fuel pump had failed and all the injectors needed cleaning
so i followed the advice from landrover garage
and its been nearly 2yrs since repair and all is well.

when you consider that the diesel engine was designed in the days of empire, to run on poorly refined peanut oil in the tropics, you'd think modern refineries would be capable of producing something perfectly usable today.

Quality is variable depending on who is selling the stuff. Sadly the TD4 is hyper fussy about fuel used. Every time I've put "budget" fuel in mine, it's caused running issues. Hence I now only use V Power and nothing else.

if you're air intake the big plastic bit bolted to the engine
is full off black sludge it will run v bad.
when i took mine off it was a right mess its recomended you
clean it out every year.
you can blank the egr off which will stop the problem
but i'm not sure in the long term its a good idea
i use supermarket fuel with no problems
i have 133.000 on the clock now

This thread has cropped up quite a few times. My tank is about 3/4 full at present with Texaco diesel at 106.9 per litre on the way back home from a camping holiday (Pembrokeshire) .
So. Allow me to run the tank dry (nearly) and I'll fill up with V power nitro (my favourite) and record the mileage on the speedometer. I'll also record the cost per litre and the total for the tankful. After that, I'll let you know when the yellow light is on and miles travelled. I'll then put in a bog-standard supermarket diesel (without any additive) and do like-wise with the mileage and cost, yellow light etc.. After that, I'll do the same again with a bog-standard Supermarket fuel plus and additive and recorded mileage, cost, yellow light etc.
Are we up for it?
Freelander 1, TD4, '55' plate.

i only ever run mine to the first mark
ive never seen the yellow light
so i'm out sorry.
mind it does only cost me £45 to fill up
every 3 n half weeks

I'd be very interested to know how it works out, I believe its an urban myth re supermarket fuel being inferior, simply cos its all I've ever used and have never had a problem, I might be wrong, but can only comment on what I've experienced myself.

I have notived that when using bog standard diesel my TD4 runs better and has better acceleration. Mileage seems pretty much the same using supermarket or bog standard diesel. Currently using quality expensive diesel and not noticing any difference so far.
