Hi folks.
new to this forum.
I have a 90 defender 300 tdi from 1998, that needs a new cluth. Just to be prepared for the shock: How many hours does it normally take for the garage to make this operation ?

A good garage could easily do it in half a day. The first one I ever did took me 5 days working for a couple of hours on my drive when I got home each night. I'd say maybe 8 hours total. I took the seats out and lifted the box complete with the transfer box up into the cab and then out of the door with an engine hoist. I'd say that is the easiest way. You could do it yourself if you are fairly confident. I didn't even have a ramp. With a ramp and transmission jack I reckon I could do one in 3 hours if I really tried. So a proper mechanic should have no problem getting one done in half a day.

Oh and as for the cost I went for the biggest and heaviest clutch and spring I could find along with a heavy duty release bearing. Think it cost about £70 to £80 total.
Never even phoned a garage but if I remember rightly when the new disco needed a clutch and flywheel it cost around £700/£800. I'd imagine a fender would be £500 ish but someone will tell you how much who has had it done.
 
Clutch kit with fork £80 and a couple of days to do it your self for free.
No flywheel needed on a 300 tdi.
A good self employed mechanic would charge about £200.

khaos, was it you that wrote a 'how to' on this? i will be taking my gearbox and transfer box out but dont wana take the engine and everything out.

is it just floor and seat box out? crane in, undo and lift out..?

I didn't, it might have been buster.

It's just floor out, seats out, seatbox out and then take the check strap off the door and open it.
Props off.
Put a jack under the sump to keep the engine still.
Engine hoist through the door and onto the gearbox and then undo the bell housing and lift the box out.

Getting it back on can be a bit harder because it has to be perfectly straight. What I did was put a bit of decking across the chassis to rest it on and line it up. I'd recommend 2 people for removing and reattaching the box.

You can see how little space I had to work with because the garage wasn't big enough so it was done on the drive.

I am not an expert on this, but me and mate did this last week. Take out the transfer box, slide back the gearbox fit clutch. It took us 5 hours, the only reason we did it that way, was because I changed the transfer box for a disco one to up my gearing
 
hmm, is it easy enough to get the gearbox out if you take the transfer box off first? main issue is, i dont wana have to jack my chassis apart to take that bloody crossmember out! had to on my bosses cos we took the engine gearbox and transferbox out all in one.. in that situation tho, it was much easier to do it that way, (although i havent put it back in yet!).

Why not go up like I did?

Interesting idea

Did that avoid removing the interior seats, tunnel etc.?
 
i found it easier to pull out tunnel and engine and you can get a good look around the engine and chassis then give it a clean mine took about 4hrs tops but that was a 19j so dont know how much harder the 300 tdi would be.
