I've posted this already in engines section but not had any replies so hope I don't get into any bother with admin but I'm going to try it in the range rover section on the off chance someone here sees it.

I will delete one when one gets some replies...hope this is ok

Ok so the P38 I bought lasted 2 weeks before major working needed, core plug is leaking!!

It is the 2.5 BMW diesel engine, rear most core plug, the one you can't get too without alot of hassle, on the back of the engine, above gearbox tunnel, behind a water pipe that feeds into the heater matrix..

First issue was finding a replacement, no luck from motor factors, paddocks,John craddock and discontinued at landrover and my local BMW dealer didn't understand why a range rover has a BMW engine...anyway I found an old-skool garage that has boxes and boxes of stuff, a few of the boxes contain core plugs so happy days..

Now to the hard part...

What is the best way to get to it, a local mechanic says to get over a pit, lower gearbox and get to it that way but I don't think I'll get the angle to get the old one out that way, I thought maybe remove both prop shafts from transfer box, remove radiator and pull the engine forwards but he says this cannot be done but didn't say why..

Any of you guys done this core plug and know the best way of getting to it?

Hi, just a point but if 1 core plug has gone, chances are that it would be worth changing them all. pull engine and do the lot ,they will then last forever if you use antifreeze .

I was thinking same but can I not get to the others without removing engine?
I hate the fact some nobber couldn't be arsed to put antifreeze in his car and is now making me drop my engine!

I agree, the worlds, full of pillocks. But now its yours, you can solve the problems and have a good vehicle .Best of luck Mick

....someone on here must have done a core plug replacement on a 2.5 DSE...

or have some knowledge on the best/easiest way to get at it....

engine up?
engine down?
engine forwards?
engine out?

Do what you have to do to get it done.

very helpful, cheers

What do you want me to do nip down and do mine, then i can describe in minute detail how to do it? I have changed lots of core plugs, but not on one of these with the engine in. It seems neither has anyone else, so you will have to figure it out yourself. Not every question can be given a difinative answer. :);)

yes please, if you go and do yours, can you video it (in HD) so I can see exactly how you've done it....

I posted the question yesterday, had no replies regarding the best way of doing it so I thought it could well have been missed, or different people on today that wasn't on yesterday who could help.

Maybe someone has done some other work to that same engine that required lowering down but for some reason this couldn't happen so that would rule lowering it, or someone might have removed an engine but it took 3 days to put back in and get the electrics working again, so I'd know to avoid that if possible...

Being a landrover forum, I thought it be the best place for advice but it seems the admin are a bit grumpy on here :D
