right, got the engine hot today and put my hand in the fan, fan stops, takes ages to get spinning again, time to go...

Just my tuppence worth. I removed my viscous fan and fitted an electric one from a van. Even here in Spain I have to be in traffic at least 7-10 minutes before the fan cuts (just under 3/4 on MY gauge). However, worthy of note is when at motorway speeds and on an incline the temp climbs a little and the fan comes on!

We never assume the viscous is coming into play at motorway speeds because a, you would not hear it and b, most people are to intent on watching where they are going but in fact it does. I also have noted that as soon as low gear is selected and you start to work the car on the beach or hills the fan is on quite a lot.

I was told years ago that the radiators on Land Rovers were overspec in production in case you took one out of the UK to a hot country, this was in fact not true!

I have compared my Spanish spec rad with a UK version and whilst the outside dimensions are the same the cooling tubes are far bigger. Oil cooler is the same.

Before fitting the electric fan I did try using the twin air con fans, once they came on in traffic they held the temperature but were not capable of lowering it to the point that they could switch off. Once on the move they went off within a minute or so.

Bearing in mind they are blowing through the air con rad which offers some resistance which somebody else pointed out about eight pages back.

They may be perfectly ok the UK.

well pit bull, i was looking at the the aircon fans on one of the rangie v8's earlier and when they are engaged they suck the warm air from the engine bay out of the grill, shouldnt it be the other way round, i.e sucking the outside air in through the rad then into the engine bay???
if i swapped the live and eather off each fan would they spin the other way??? in all the landy's i have been in the aircon make the engine hotter when engaged???

Just to clarify for you:

The fans when on the grill side of the radiator BLOW into the rad towards the engine.
When a fan is on the engine side of the radiator then they SUCK the air through.

If you swap the live and earth of a fan it is true the motor would run in reverse however the fan will not move the air properly as the PITCH of the fan blades is directional.

It is true when the air con is on it does add heat to the radiator but this is minimal, look at it this way, even a car that has no air con sitting in the middle of the sahara desert with an electric fan blowing 40 degree heat into the rad, if all is working then the car will not overheat.

not a case of helping me, more a case of clarifying somthing, so best case is to turn the aircon fans onto the engine side of the rad and leave the pos and earth as they are.
 
NO, sorry its not that simple!

The air con fans BLOW so if you put them on the engine side they will simply blow the hot air from the engine bay forwards and cause the car to overheat.

If you reverse the polarity the fans will work backwards and MAY pull a little air through however, the fan blade pitch will be wrong so the fan is not as good as it should be.

If you have the original air con fans then do what you originaly said which is wire them up independent of the air con. They will be more efficient (is that spelt right?) if you remove the air con rad and fit them nearer to the main rad.

This will give lots of room in the engine bay. If you intend to keep the aircon then the best thing to do is go to a breakers yard that specialises in JAP cars, the range of electric fans will amaze you, I found two in a housing that fitted and cooled my V12 Jaguar coupe a couple of years back.

Just find one that is on the engine side i.e. sucker and which has a decent housing or bracket that you can modify to suit the Land Rover.

Take your car with you and remove the cowling and viscous unit and the room this frees up will make it easy to find something that fits ok.

Then just wire it up (relay ect) and away you go, remember if you ever go wading you will need to disable the fan with a switch. The water rarely gets into the motor and causes a problem.

The main issue is a) the fan may come on and spray water all around the engine compartment or b) the load imposed on the fan may break the blades or c) if the blades do not break it may blow the fuse due to being overloaded or d) you can isolate it when working on the car preventing nasty surprises when it starts unexpectedly, any other reasons to isolate are welcome!

I am a fan (no pun intended) of electric fans and once set up correctly last for years and save on power/fuel/noise and water pumps (assuming the original was attached to the water pump as it is on a 200 tdi.
