Hi, I've just fitted a set of electric rad fans to my V8 D1 and I'd like to find a way of getting an accurate temperature reading of the coolant so I can set the fan cut in temp.

I don't want an aftermarket gauge, so I was if theres another way of doing it?
Maybe a thermometer in the expansion tank? Might not get a true reading but it'll be better then the OEM gauge.

Yeah stick one of those battery powered meat thermometers in there, like you use on the barbie, should give you a good idea of the coolent temp.
 
Mine peaks at 93c and stays at that steady whatever the weather. Tapped into the elbow for top hose to fit the extra sensor. Very simple. Or fit a head sensor behind the bolt on that elbow, should read the same as coolant.

Have a look at the Kenlow Fan web site. They show u how to set up an electric cooling fan, which is preset at xx degrees above the engine normal running temp, therefore the electric fan won’t run a normal temp but will switch on as soon as normal temp goes above the preset temperature.

Sounds great with an steel block, but with V8 alloy one I wouldn’t won’t to increase the engine temp over the normal running temperature before the fan cuts in, hence LR still fit viscous fans which adjust as necessary as soon as the engine is started.
