Doobs too

Since getting my P38 I've noticed one of it's idiosycrasies is that it looses coolant quite quickly. I don't think this is through a gasket as there is no mayo anywhere and I'm pretty sure I saw it dripping from under the car yesterday (need more time to properly dagnose as I've only had the car a couple of days). It doesn't overheat, I was even towing with it this morning and it was fine.

I've decided to renew all of the rubber hoses as they're pretty old anyway and while the coolant is dropped I might as well do the lot. How easy is it to clean the rad out, do the tanks come off and can the core be rodded? Anything else I should do while it's in bits?

Any tips would be appreciated.

if the rad is suspect , chuck it in the bin and fit a new unit , they cant be cleaned or flushed properly .
also if your changing the heater hose`s be very carefull removing the old one otherwise you may disturb the heater o rings , youve been warned :D
rick.

Thanks gents, I'll check the bottom hose for rad function before I change it I think. I'll check the carpets too, good point I should have noticed.

Is there any grease / oil / vasaline / butter / KY I can use to ease pipes onto joints that won't bu99er the system up?

shortly after i got mine it started using water, no mayo in oil cap, didnt overheat till summer came, was cracked block! has been rebuilt since with new block with top hat liners...
dont wish to worry you but no mayo dont mean sh!t......

 gulp. I really hope it isn't that.

Are there any other symptoms of a cracked block? How much did it cost to fix (say it quickly so it doesn't sounds so bad)?

Guess what I did! Does anyone know if they are standard O rings, and if so what size? LR dealer can't get them until Saturday and I'd like to get on with it tonight if poss.

The heater "O" rings are 18.64mm outside dia. X 3.53mm section. If you get an Inch size selection box from Aldi or Lidl (Can't remember which)-the "O" rings are No. 15 in the box.

Got it wrong-again.
Mine have been in 5years and no leaks. Perhaps I should change them for the proper ones to conform.

Thanks gents, my local LR dealer managed to get some in early Saturday morning though so I bought those. Got them changed now and all seems to be OK. The idiot who had the car before me totally buggered the dash though. It helped the access a little as there were so many broken fixings it flexed a lot. I know where all of the creeks are coming from now. I think some point in the near future I need a new dash moulding. That'll be an interesting weekend!

..well i wouldn't risk fitting the wrong size O Rings, not worth it. I can only say you've been lucky that you've no leaks for 5 years. Correct Replacements from Landrover are still 22mm.
