Hello all, I recently bought a 2000 TD5 Disco and its loosing water out of the overflow pipe of the coolant expansion tank. I guess head gasket is most likely but as its going to be pricing I want to try and iron out anything else before I go down that route. I'm waiting for a new cap to arrive. Otherwise all I've done is topped up the system via the expansion tank, waiting for it to get warm and any gas escape (with the heater on hot in the truck). Is there a list of anything else I can try before taking to the garage. Also, on that note does anyone know a good Landy place in Bristol - someone mentioned a place in Nailsea.

Thanks!

Bob

Mine has always settled about 2cm lower than the "proper" level in the expansion tank after topping up. I don't know where the excess goes but after 15,000 miles or so I've stopped worrying......

If its coming out of the expansion over flow its most probably over boiling. This is usally a case of the cap not sealing properly as the system is suppose to be pressurised. Once pressurised water boils at a higher temperature. I noticed you have bought a cap good first place to start. Also when running to heat the engine up turn the heaters off. you want the engine to run normally with out boilling in the summer with no heating, this would be normal running temp. If still overheating with new cap then there are a couple of things to try.
Temp thermostate - need to remove it make sure its not stuck, for the price of them I would just change it
Temp sender - can be tested with a volt meter
Blockage in water system would be best to drain the system put a hose on one end and see is its going around the block.
Is the head gasket has gone then I would expect milks gunk on the oil filler cap - engine will overheat on gauge and if left too long at high temp you will melt the valve stem seals and possibly worp the head.
Don't go straing for the head gasket as more expensive job if not needed but is easy to do if you have some mech experiance. Start with a Hayne manual
hope this helps
