My Defender 90 has sprung a coolant leak from what looks like that big black box on the bulkhead on the passenger side. Can i get inside of that easily and sort it?

That will be your heater matrix. You can remove it and drill out the rivets to replace the matrix.

Several peeps on this forum have detailed the removal and repair of the heater matrix. Search and ye shall be enlightened.

Easy if you dont have factory air! Getting those two bolts at the bottom are near impossible from the inside. The heater box actually bolts to that bracket, I found it easier to remove two small (I think about 8mm ) and then one the same size which bolts to the heater fan. The box then comes out leaving the bracket in place. I have yet to refit as I`m waiting on a matrix to arrive. A couple of air con pipes also need to be moved but not a problem. Small hole found where matrix had rubbed against box. I will shield with some rubber to stop it happening again.

Really appreciate this. Is the matrix disposable or repairable. I used to have a SAAB 96 and when the radiator blew a hole i had that repaired in a day.

New matrix arrived today, all done except can't work out how to set the cables which control the vents for hot/cold air and floor/window direction. i marked them with tipex but the one on the side does not seem to move. Any tips on setting these just right?

If the cable isn't moving when you move the dashboard lever, need to undo the lever (2 screws) and check the cable is fixed to the lever/not snapped
