Hi guys

just woundering if someone can shed some light on my problem, for some reason there is some coolant leaking from my header tank cap, i noticed it last week and after toping up the level and making sure the cap was tight it was still leaking , also when i had the cap off i noticed the two o rings where flat looking so i replaced the cap with a new one ( britpart ) and it is still leaking, from cold and after about 2 1/2 - 3 miles the car reaches normal temp and stays there and the heater works find and toasty, could i still have a faulty cap or is this the start of something serious, the car is an 03 d2 td5 auto with 85000 on the clock.

forgot to say the coolant comes out of the over flow pipe aswell.

Is the top hose pressurized or not, after normal ride at operating temp?
A soft hose, prove a cap not working properly.

right just had a ride to halfords in stockport a 7 mile motorway trip at 70 mph, when i stoped in the car park i opened the bonnet to check the top hose was pressurized and it was, but didn't seem to be loosing any coolant from the cap or over flow pipe, then after going into halford to have a look at bike carriers i drove back home again on the motorway and cruising at 80 mph and when i got back lifted the bonnet and there was coolant around the top of the headed tank and a couple of drips from the over flow pipe any ideas as it is doing my head in.

How hard was the top hose? Still relatively easy to squeeze is normal. Rock solid is bad news.
 
it was easy to press and not solid, anyway whilst the system was hot i undid the blead screw and i got loads and loads of air out of it and after i removed the screw i removed the header tank and lifted it up till there was coolant and no air refitted the bleed screw and refitted the header tank, just waiting for it to cool off now till morning then i will top the system up, then hopefully its sorted.

fingers crossed that it's air and not exhaust gasses.:eek:

after i have checked the level in the morning and toped up if needed i will give it a good run and see how it is.

I did 3000 miles on my landy with a blown head gasket. I then did a further 4000 after the head gasket had been replaced before making my mind up that summit still wasn't right. It turned out that I'd travelled 7000 miles with a head cracked in 2 places (they'd missed it the first time it was skimmed and tested). The engine never actually overheated the whole 7000 miles but it did keep overpressurising every now and again. Everybody that saw it/heard it run couldn't believe the it was the headgasket/cracked head.
 
yeh there the strangest engine i have ever come across, normally if you are mechanicaly minded you can find the problem fairly easy but with these its a case of trial and error, its just that we are going to cornwall in 8 weeks time and need to get it sorted.

had a bit off bad luck this morning, came to check the level and undoing the cap the center of the cap stayed in the header tank and it all unscrewed quite easy, managed to get the center out and had to resort to refitting the old cap after topping up the header tank, just need to give it a bit of a run now.

Britpart cap, isn't it? I just ordered mine, genuine LR!
