I started doing the timing on my Series 3 today prior to fitting new dizzy. As soon as I started rotating the engine by hand to set the timing mark, coolant started leaking quite substantially, but more or less stopped when I stopped turning. As always, quite hard to identify exactly where it's leaking from, but seems to be coming out round or from the bearing between the fan and the water pump - see photo, which is looking up vertically from under the vehicle, with the front of the veh at the bottom of the photo. Presume the water pump has failed? Could this be related to an overheating incident a few weeks ago (I've had trouble with timing/mixture which I think caused the impressive steam at the top of a steep bit of the Cotswolds...) Any advice gratefully received, thanks.

Hi Jerry, I'm a novice but my series 3 overheated on a long run a few months ago and after checking that all the hoses were ok I soon realised the water pump was gone, the radiator literally emptied itself as I poured water in. Is it an original pump?
 
I've never stripped a Landy water pump, but if they are the same as pretty well every other British water pump of that era, the front graphite seal has met it's maker and it's time for a new water pump.
 
+1 shoot the pump. The water is likely coming from the weep hole in the casting - which is there to warn you that the graphite seal Castor mentioned has perished.

You have 2 ways to go - replace the pump completely or rebuild the old one. I tend to do the latter, but have a shop with the toys for such work. As such I think I'd recommend the former. :)

Thanks to all for advice. I've ordered a new pump as I haven't got a press to refurb the old one. I've gone for a Proflow pump for around £50 delivered, which I hope is a satisfactory mid-point between the £120+ LR one and the cheapo £15 model.
 
Over the years have found a middle of the road policy is best when it comes to parts prices,saves the wallet on one hand and the landy with the other.
