Used engine oil needs filtering and cutting with petrol/parafin/white spirit to get the viscosity something like diesel before you use it.
I personaly would not mix veggie as well.
It works for me and I've done over 5K miles last year using a 50/50 brew.

Doesn't mixing it with diesel 50/50 bring down the viscosity anyway?

It does but if you try and filter used engine oil it takes ages unless you heat it up first. Thinning it makes things much easier. I filter 180 litres at a go and add one 20 litre jerry of unleaded (actually its the petrol my local garage syphons out of the diesel tanks of drivers who forgot what their motor runs on - it costs me nowt). Then I use the mix 50/50 with diesel. It fires up on the button even in this cold snap. During the summer I was using it about 75/25 oil/derv with no problems but it smokes like a chimney in this cold at that ratio.

I use a washable 100 micron stainless mesh filter (£12 on fleabay) and then a 10 micron paint filter with disposable paper filter media. I burn them in my wood burning stove this time of year. Each paper filter is good for 200 litres.
Your standard on-board fuel filter filters down to between 5-10 microns.

Hi Shifty,

Please PM me an email address - I need to speak to you!

Would it matter if the used oil came from a petrol or diesel engine?

Don't imagine it will matter one bit!
Afraid yer gonna have to get your feet wet and try it for yourself. theres a risk with all these fuel saving methods and everyone will have different experiences but stick with some of the advice on here and you shouldnt go too far wrong!

Thought it wouldn't, I've got a few litres of oil from when I dropped the oil out me V8 Disco II that I had so I could put it too good use. Don't know whether it will be any good or not as It's been lying around a bit and I don't think I put a lid on the container.

Need to get a replacement landy first though. lol

If your making your own fuel, use loads of biocide in it as well as mine got contaminated by veg oil and water and cause a huge ball of muck to grow in the fuel filter (needs changing for the third time since new year, and i'm still trying to clean out the tank!

where did you get a container big enough to hold 200 litres?

These filters, is it possible to buy 'inline' filters? Ie I could have a piece of pipe coming out me used oil tank, then a filter, more hose, another filter and more hose to another tank. If you get my drift?

James, what exactly were you making? Bio? im getting set up to run my IDI golf on a WVO mix when the weather turns. should i be adding biocide also? (sorry for thread jacking!)

They are called oil drums ;) apprx 45 gallons or 200 litres each.
I collect the used oil etc. in washed 25 litre plastic detergent drums from my local car wash. Easy to handle and plentiful.

Yes the 100 micron stainless mesh filter is an inline jobby.
The paint filters can be inline or just like a coffee filter with an open top.
I use in line filters piped from the oil drum and compressed air to move the oil. You only need about 10psi if its set up properly. Careful with the air or the drum will bulge or even worse burst a seam.

Sorry to be a nuisance

Any piccies inc close ups of your set up?

and

if it isn't too much trouble any links to the stuff (filters)?

I'm glad I started this thread it's really getting the word out on this i think.

I have a question on the filters though, are they available on ebay or do you have to do some wheeling and dealing at the local hydralics place etc?

I'm thinking of just using some old tights as I'll only be wanting to filter about 5 litres or so to start with (I've not big oil supply source yet).
