Arrrrrgh, what's wrong with my Landy???

Long story very short: Battery fizzing, hissing and steaming after long journey and when boyf checked the voltage, found out that it's putting out 19v (its a 12v battery). 2nd time it's happened and 2nd battery now knackered.

Other details that may have something to do with it?????
Series 3 Lightweight, not sure of history (12v or 24v? FFR?)
Engine is 2.8 Daihatsu diesel
Alternator 12v (or so it says on the side)
Alternator putting out 22v with engine running
Red charge light permanently on.

Had the wiring tidied up after the first battery cooked and it's been fine since then (January). It's all totally beyond me and I shall be looking for a Landy-Savvy garage tomorrow, but it would be great if any of you guys could give us a clue as to what's wrong so I don't sound like a total idiot when talking to the service dept. :confused:

yer need a regulator fer a lucas ACR alternator.. little silver box under black placcy rear cover on alt. its held on by one 4mm screw and a few wires.
 
i had same problem and it was i believe its the alternator overchangin so i got a new 1 and new battery and twas sorted
 
Sorry to sound green Slob, but do I have one? And if so, can it be seen in this piccy? BTW, this was taken prior to wiring tidy up, and in its original condition when purchased...

oooo! ah just had ar thought as its a rice burner injun you might not have the lucas ACR alternator.. see if you can take a piccies of the front of the injun, both sides.
 
Thanks for all your advice. I've got her booked in with Challenger 4X4 for next Tuesday (I was swayed by their website and the pic of the head honcho in front of a Lightweight!! :) )

From our chat on the phone, he seems to think that it's the alternator up the swanny and quoted me 120 or so quid all in, which I can live with. Hopefully they won't find anything terminally wrong while she's there!! :eek:
 
Thats not to bad as a alternator will cost around £70 and if your not confident in doing it your self or correctly diagnosing the fault then £50 is fair.
 
Hi Urgent problem, my husband has a Range Rover 1998, P38. Today he was changing the battery, with the keys in the ingition and every thing locked up, he has just spend the last 2 hours trying to break in!! any advice how he can get in his car.

Desperate Wifey! sorry if its in the wrong place not sure where to put it!
 
generally on cars you can pull the top of the door out far enough to slip a bit of wire in. put a loop in the wire before hand and you should be able, with a bit of faffin around, catch the lock on the door. patience is required as yule have to experiment with the wire to get any bends in the right place
 
Use the spare key?
Call the AA/RAC
break a window
Post this in Range Rover section. Series Landys dont have clever things like central locking:D

Put a wire to positive under the bonnet and make one complete circuit then kick the front bumper. The sensor for central locking in case of accidents should pop open the central door locks. Works on vauxhalls
