:focus: I'm re-posting this announcement as the previous thread about the world record attempt went ever-so-slightly off topic (like about 6 pages worth!!!) and this event IMHO is worthy of a second chance.

This event is above politics whether national or Land Rover club/magazine/forum/or anything else-based. It's about raising funds for a group of lads & lasses, who in serving their country, are placed in mortal danger on a daily basis. Whether they should be there or not isn't the issue, raising funds for the charity is - and in the process we intend to have a bloody good time ourselves ... end of!

So, here we go again ...


Land Rover Guinness World Records™ Attempt, Gaydon, Warwickshire, England 23-24 April 2011 (Easter weekend)

Here is an interesting event for you, something unusual. A group of Land Rover enthusiasts have got together to raise a heap of funds for the worthy Help For Heroes charity, and at the same time have a bit of fun.

Held at the Motor Heritage Centre, Gaydon, Warwickshire, England, it's it’s an attempt to break the Guinness World Record™ for the Longest Land Rover Parade, previously set at Towcester Racecourse in Northants 2004.

Called CONVOY for HEROES they aim to have a convoy of 500 or more Land Rovers under the conditions set by Guinness World Records™. The record was set at 260 vehicles (set because it was first established in 2004 and there hadn’t been a record before that), with Series, Defenders, 101FC’s, Lightweights, Freelanders, Rangies and Discoveries all joining in. Now seven years on, with the Range Rover Sport thrown into the mix, there are an awful lot more Land Rover models out there, so achieving the goal of 500 should be a doodle … we hope!

23-24 April is the Easter weekend, so hopefully that will entice a few more owners to turn out as the Monday will obviously be a Bank Holiday, so no work!!!

The weekend however won’t just be confined to the world record attempt as there will be a host of attractions due to be announced in the New Year. Until then, have a butcher’s at the website for more details - www.convoy4heroes.org.uk

A few questions, if I may...

It looks like we might be able to afford the expense after all, depending on whether I get a bonus at some point before it happens or not (fingers crossed)!!

Can we camp on-site in a caravan, or does it have to be a tent? No electric needed, of course. Caravans are fine.

Also, can I just confirm that if my girlfriend and I want to come, we'll need to pay £12 each for entry, £15 per night of camping (for both of us) and £25 to take part in the parade? It's not an issue... just want to confirm, so i can keep it in my budget moving forward! Yep, that's correct. My immediate reaction was £15 for camping was too steep, but since voicing my thoughts I've been told that Gaydon charge the organisers £13 per night camping, so they are actualy only making £2 per unit towards their running costs. Also you have to remember that Gaydon is a registered charity too, therefore 'giving away' weekends free of charge to event organisers (whether it be for a charity event or not) isn't something that's going to happen. C'est la vie! You have to swallow things like that to book a good venue these days.

Finally, presumably, if we turn up Saturday morning and leave Sunday evening, we'll only have to pay 1 night's camping, but will we actually have enough time to get through the museum on Saturday, have a nice evening and then take part in the parade on Sunday before collecting our caravan and heading home? Does that sound like a plan that will work? Yes. Like all museums, if you went into fine detail it could take a week, but to see all the main exhibits and have a really good visit, one day is fine.

Another point, the Motor Heritage Centre is far from stuffy. It's one of the best motor collections in the land and somewhere I'd thoroughly recommend. One piece of advice though, if on a budget avoid the restaurant/cafeteria. Like all establishments of this type it ain't cheap!

The actual convoy itself is on Sunday, right? Briefing at 12 noon, first vehicle departing at 3pm? Is that correct?

Also, I think I read somewhere about spectators not being present, but possibly riding in some people's vehicles (where willing, of course!)... am I getting the right end of the stick?

Are you sure that's what it says? ... I read they're aiming at "500 or more"....500 being the goal, not the limit, but doing there best to fit extras in should numbers go beyond 500.

Rest assured, they said that initially because it's a realistic target. If truth be known, they are hoping for a lot more - a 1,000+ perhaps - but if they said 1,000 and only 550 turned up, they would have egg on their faces. Safer to aim at 500.

Besides, the real target is to raise loads of dosh for the charity, breaking the record is a bonus!

Dont you go mixing up politicians with soldiers Iwanna...thats a dim mistake to make.

They sign up to serve the country..not to make decisions which are politically motivated.

If you disagree with the actions, fair enough, but vent your disagreement towards those who talk but dont fight. You have, after all, a vote which can change the government.

The ones who fight are giving you the freedom to voice that opinion and make that vote.
 
Here is the full list of mini-convoys, showing their proposed routes and estimated mileages and duration.

They will stop at a number of pick-up points at set times (to be published in advance) on each route.

There are a few more than first envisaged, but understandable given the breadth of England and the densely populated south and southeast.

Commencing with the “North mini-convoy” to Gaydon, thereafter clockwise around points of the compass.

Please bear in mind that at this stage, only two of these proposed routes have been confirmed, so if you will be attending CONVOY for HEROES and yourself or your club fancy leading a mini-convoy, please register your interest by contacting me direct – 4x4trading@talk21.com
