Hi all,

Some time ago I bought an 1988 110 that had had the engine and gearbox from a Range Rover installed, the 200TDi. Everything was fine and working ok, but after I'd done about 100km in it I lent it to an associate to drive while we were working together. Almost immediately after he got out of the motor there were issues.

Firstly the solenoid on the starter motor burnt out - no problem and probably coincidental, I replaced this everything was ok. Then, after about 5 mins of driving I was having some difficulty in getting it in gear. I managed to limp back home where, just as I'm pulling up the car loses all forward momentum. I can put it into gear, but it just doesn't go anywhere. Then I noticed that there was fluid bleeding from the hubs of the wheels. I thought that it was likely to be connected but I had a million and one others things to do that I'd just not got round to taking a proper look. Now is that time.

I stripped the panels out from the interior, around the gear levers and also noticed that the link rod (not sure if that's the right name) that connects the diff lock gear lever to the gearbox, had snapped. So, I thought result! this should be an easy fix but I'll just double check first. I levered the connections on the gearbox to how I think they should be positioned for diff lock in H and started it up, still nothing. There was also nothing at the clutch pedal, it's as light as you like.

So today I'm having a mooch about and bearing in mind I'm not that clued up on mechanics, especially on this motor (even as basic as it is), I take a look inside the fluid reservoirs (the master cylinder I think, the one to the right of the brake servo) and it's bone dry. Now I'm really hoping that this is just a basic, easily replaced seal somewhere but really, I don't have the experience in these motors to know where to start looking, I'm a Landy virgin. So, does anyone have an inclination as to what the problem may be or have any ideas on what else I can do to narrow down the probable fault?

I hope I've explained clearly enough, but if I'm not making much sense and you need a specific question answering to enable you to advise me, the please let me know.

Thanks in advance.

Please please please...edit your post and use paragraphs..i'm an old man and this looks like a piece of coal.

Think you've got at least 2 probs there..i'm guessing clutch slave cylinder has gone, hence the lack of fluid...

Putting the diff lock into H won't help unless you can get the difflock engaged..sounds like its not, it may be in neutral.

I dont mind coming down and looking at it...might take me all summer to come to a decision.

I'll put you up! When can you get here!!!! Do you think it's terminal then? And what other cylinders do you mean? I'd look in my Haynes but my mate took it.

If it's the clutch slave cylinder, then this might help...

Checkto see if ye have fluid coming down yer clutch padal.. if so, then it might be yer master cylinder that's knackered.....

Dunno where the fluid is leakin' from yer hubs... if it's from the rubber / metal caps, then ye've probably got blocked breather pipes. Ones pipes are clear, renew caps.
If it's leakin' around swivel ball then it's time to change yer seal...check to see if balls are pitted.. if so, might as well change them anaw.

Nothing terminal mate, the guides buster provides are excellent...you may want to take some pics of things and post them up...use photobucket like you did for your empire pictures!

Cheers guys. Empire! very funny, very funny indeed. Buster your links look good, but I'm on a netbook right now and the pics are too big for the screen. I'll fire up the other half's 17" jobbie tomorrow and look through them, then I'll perhaps feel a little braver about getting in and about the motor to try and see where exactly it's bleeding from. Thanks again guys, will report back tomorrow and will take pics too.
Night.

Aye laters;):D

Evening! Well sods law, I get up today and twang a muscle in my back, so no chance of crawling about under the motor. I did manage to hobble out and take some pics though. Not sure how multiple images will be displayed but here goes;
This is one of the reservoir that is empty

This is the diff connection rod (?) that's snapped

These are my bleeding wheel hubs

Right, let's see if that upload worked then!

here's one before the suspension lift and without its roof. Not really relevant I know, but I'm in the groove of this photbucket malarkey!

Yeah similar to that one Buster, but different. I think the 200tdi motor & box is from an 89/90 Range Rover. The link rod at the front of the pic is different too, I have a straight, U shaped bar, with a pin around the middle. this pic isn't great but it shows the broken end which is still attached.
