Does anyone know how much it would cost to convert a 2002 Defender td5 to a V8?
The job would just be too big for me. I'm looking for a small independent Landy garage in the south east of England. I'd need them to source all the parts.
Any ideas, boys and girls?
 
If you gave a garage an engine, transmission plus your Land Rover and just asked them to get on with it?
It’s probably a week’s work plus any parts they will need.
So at (say) £50 per hour that’s £2,000 in labour charges
 
Often see folk on here asking for advice on going the other way. There is infrequently a V8 up fer sale on lz.

I was thinking about 3K in labour.
Not sure if I should get the garage to source parts or buy a donor Disco.
 
Don't get my wrong, I have a 110 V8 and love it. But why would you go from td5 to v8, a chipped td5 is just as fast and makes good noises with double the fuel economy.

It's just to have a V8. I've always wanted one.
I could get a P6 V8 for 5K but there would be on going costs and on going costs.
Any decent American 70s V8 is 15K+, I simply don't have the money for that.
I won't do a swap because it is rock solid and I know it inside out.
I could get a P38 for 4K but electrical issues put me off.
You said you 110 V8 is great.
I want the same feeling.

Rover V8s are ****.

If youre going to do it, do it properly.

Toyota 1UZ V8 - roll in roll out at DT Engine Solutions is roughly £6k. 3UZ bout £7k

Rough prices ive found from others online

LS1/2 - £15k
LS3- £30 - £35k
Ford Coyote - £20 - 25k

Not many places in the South East do that kind of work to a standard and cost I would be happy with.
 
I love Land Rover V8's, I would have another at the drop of a hat, if I could afford the petrol, HOWEVER:-
The TD5 is a belting engine, sounds good and isn't far off a V8 in performance terms.
If you stick with a TD5, you will not have insurance problems a conversion may cause.
If you do go down the V8 route, I would look for a rotten Discovery 2 (plenty about) and use the engine, gear box and ancillaries from that. You could use a Discovery 1, it may be an easier fit, but they are getting thin on the ground and Disco 2 parts are from the same era as your Defender.
 
As above, the TD5 can be easily tuned with just a £250 remap and nothing else to give 160bhp which isn’t far off the standard V8 185bhp
