Hi I am new to forum chat groups but feel confident this group can help us solve our TD 4 problem! We have been back and forth to garage few times asking them to find out why there is black smoke coming out our freelander. We did a full set of filter replacements and oil change plus checked and replaced two inter cooler hoses. They also cleaned out a smaller filter recently which I cannot remember name of. It was clean for a day or two but has sadly returned again. The car is a 2003 Freelander TD4 is this just an age thing that we are stuck with or is there something else we could try?

Do you know if the garage checked the fuel system? I've always thought black smoke was the result of over-fueling.

Black smoke is over fueling, or a lack of air. So you need to check that the EGR valve is clean, free to close and not sticking.
All the boost pipes (there are 4 on a 2003 TD4) also need to be checked for leakage.
It could also be suffering from carbon build up in the inlet manifold and intake ports. This causes cylinders 1 and 2 to get less air than 3 and 4, giving rise to black smoke under acceleration.

Wow thank you that's good info we only changed two of the four boost pipes the EGR valve got cleaned last time it was in a week ago but they have failed to fix our clutch issue. We had a breakdown today on holiday with the AA man telling us the clutch fluid is leaking into the slave cylinder so is why we lost use of our clutch! He also said we should expect a bit of black smoke due the age of engine which I don't want to believe but maybe he is right! I will ask garage to check other pipes too though many thanks!
