Firstly hi to everyone ...just joined Landyzone !!!

I have a Freelander 2 which had this strange noise for about six months although it did get very bad on xmas day, called my dealer and had the car looked at in Jan..dealer said "known steering problem" the parts were ordered and the car went in for the work last Mon - Tues.

On Tuesday during a test drive the technicains notice car "underpowered" and returned to the garage and proceeded to add 4 litres of oil into the engine !!!!

The Car then went back out to continue the test drive and burst into flames within 3 miles !! the car is know a write-off

Just posting to see if anyone thinks the power steering / noise may be a cause or the work that was done or the fact the garage put 4 litres into the car may be a bit strange...obv the car was driving ok when delivered to the garage.

Sorry for the long post any advise or simular experience from anyone

Cheers

if it was damaged whilst the garages liability - then its there problem. You just want a replacement vehicle to the same standard.

thats why they have liability insurance :D.

they DO have liability insurance?

thanks mhm,

The problem with fire is the "match" is seldom found...just looking to see if the garage scenerio stands up....ie car taken for test drive..car then shows serious power issues (poss turbo failure) ..car returns to garage and has 4 litres of oil poured in then out for a second test drive ..it all sounds a bit odd to me...

Cheers

very true .good forensic engineers cost about £1750 - £2000 for the report and even good ones will tell you thier is no gaurantee that the cause of the fire may be found...just fishing in the forum for "expert" mechanics who may be able to say if a turbo fails could that "drain" 4 litres of oil ? if so where would that oil go ?

Cheers

all you need is someone who can muddy the waters sufficiently so that the garage cant say "its not our fault".

realistically - yu can do two things......
1) roll over and take the hit.
2) start fighting back.

Duty of care, also if there was 4 litres of oil required
1) there would be smoke where it blew it out and oil in exhaust
2)if the turbo oil seals had gone and Diesel engine it should rev to distruction.
3) I'd be wondering if they spilt pas fluid and didn't bother cleaning it off and it caught fire.
4)they did not tighten up something and it sprayed oil on hot engine.

I would also question why they put 4 ltrs of oil in it and didn't look for leaks on a ramp

Seek legal advice

NVQ 3 MOTOR VEHICLE

Cheers Fanatic,

LR are carrying out a NON intrusive survey on Monday..till someone can prove who or what caused the fire then the legal people can not advise as to course of action to take...moving back to mechanical not legal issues does anyone have any comments on the dealerships story..that is
The car is taken for a test drive ..within seconds or minutes the car has loss of power (cause ? turbo ?)
The car returns to garage and is topped up with 4 litres of oil questions

As you need to open the bonnet (obv.) to top up oil would whoever did this not see evidence of a fualty turbo and some oil leak ?

If the turbo had blown/gone at this point what would now happen as they then take the car out again with a futher 4 litres of oil in it ?

Thanks again for any technical thoughts

Freelander2 Diesels built between 01/02/2007 and 23/05/2008 are subject to a recall...

"It has been identified that the controller circuit of the Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) the supplementary cabin heater may short circuit. This normally results in draining of the battery, and a non start situation.Additionally, the short circuit may lead to a distinct smell from hot/melted components which in extreme circumstances may develop into a fire. It is noted that, all of the above symptoms can occur when the vehicle is in use, or parked unattended."

Vehicle IDs affected are: SALFA27B47H000100 to SALFA24C48H111695

Just in case you weren't aware ;)

i check the oil levels perhaps once a month ..there is also a low oil warning light , so I think it is highly unlikely that there was a very little oil in the car when it was taken to the garage.

If the garage is at fault NOT a fault in the LR itself the key is when the car showed signs of a loss in power on the 1st test drive..what were the symptoms ie a trail of white smoke ? or anything else which may have given them a clue as to what was wrong...to then put more oil in the car and go back out for a second test drive without identifying the fault was that neglect on there part ? I am going to try and speak to the garage mechanic today ..but he may already have been told not to talk to me

It is a real mess.....as mentioned LR are going to view the car Monday I can only hope their report points a figure at something.

If not it is me against LR and/or the dealership...I may be looking for any garage or LR "expert" who would be happy to say that if a car under there care had shown the same symptoms as mine taking the car out for a second test drive was irresponible if the fault was not known.

cheers carnut

Hi, i have just joined landyzone and reading the forum about the freelander 2 power steering pump problem.
We have brought a demo freelander 2 in october on a 58 plate, its now done 19k mile and has got to have a steering rack and pump. with the 1st whirring noise on sunday 2 days later terrible noise 3 days later and undrivable. yes its under warrenty. i am a bit worried about this as the relay guy said its not the 1st hes seen. he says its somethink to do with the type of oil in the pump landrover use. i am yet to pick it up from landrover dealer and i am going to quiz them about the problem as i like to now why this go wrong.

its muck in the system blocking a very fine mesh filter screen, thereby starving the pump, hence making more muck in the system until it can go no longer.

Had a similar problem with my 09 plate freelander 2 regarding power steering. Sudden increase in engine noise especially when turning. First told it was power steering pump but as its under warrenty straight back to dealer. They immediately said they would change the steering rack and resevoir as its due to small piece of weld breaking off internally in the rack blocking the resevoir fine mesh filter and causing air in the pump hence the noise. Obviously they are aware of the problem , seem to indicate its only on early models. However if it happens after the warrenty will be very expensive for the owner. If you are in this position would think you have a good case to get it fixed at no cost as its obviously a known problem. Not bad enough for a recall I guess . Mine has been done today and all seems OK on drive home. I hope!!

apparantly if out of warranty it is a two day £1500.00 job, mine is now out of warranty, what to do i keep asking myself.

From another Freelander 2 specific site.
There is a technical bulletin from Land Rover stating that some early Freelander 2 had weld spatter inside the steering rack, this breaks losse and generally causes havock.
If it's under warranty no issue, if it's not LR have been known to offer goodwill gestures towards the work - 33% has been mentioned.

Some discussion about fit for purpose etc. but £500 off is better than a kick in the teeth.

My 2009 FL2 diesel (ex-demo) has done only 30,000 kms and has just had its steering rack and power steering pump replaced after a horrible whining noise. My dealer in Cape Town claimed they found metal filings which is consistent with the other comments I have read on this issue.
When this fault was repaired, I was hopeful that it would solve another concern I have which is the subject of another thread I started a few days ago - when coming to a stop with the motor still idling, I often hear what sounds like an auxilliary motor in the background. It's quite loud, but ceases after 5 - 10 seconds? After the repair to the PS, the noise is unfortuantely still there.
I'm a first time owner of a Freelander, so I'm a bit worried!

Electric motor noise when you stop the car is normal.
I'm sure someone has a better technical explanation but --- there is a motorised flap in the intake, this flap needs to be in a certain position (closed?) to aid starting, when the engine is started the flap moves to the running position. When you stop the car the flap is motored to the start position so that starting is quicker.
