Hi

Defender 1995 300TDI

I noticed a serious coolant leak from the housing joint by the thermostat. I undid the coupling and found a very perished gasket and also that the rubber seal on the thermostat was massively deformed and obviously need replacement. However I am confused because the gasket I ordered (called a thermostat housing gasket) is nothing like the gasket I have extracted.

Do I need a gasket here or does the thermostat rubber do the job?

Thanks,

Dave

Thanks people. That really helps.

The perished gasket I've found is between the thermostat housing (21) and the coolant outlet elbow, but I've bought the gasket 19 in error. The gasket I've found is obviously not a standard fitting as it doesn't appear in the diagram and the rubber on the thermostat should be doing the sealing. But my rubber is in a sorry state.

I've now bought a new thermostat and some gasket maker paste (just in case).
