Hi all

I have 91 Defender 90. It's VIN number is "SALL.....". Paddocks suggests my vehicle is of the "from LA" variety, which should be disc brakes on the rear. However, it has drum brakes.

Whats going on? I presume someone must have swapped it for an older one at some point?

Any advice or suggestions would be great. :D

you have 91 def which should have drum rear, spares people often dont know what the **** there talking about

The 'From LA' bit refers to the last two letters in the VIN before the serial number. The VIN breaks down like this:

Characters 1-3: Manufacturer ID
Characters 4-9: Vehicle Type
Character 10: Model Year
Character 11: Where Built
Characters 12-17: Serial Number

My VIN is SALLDVAF7HA705128, so the relevant two letters for part ordering are 'HA' - model year H (1991) plant code A (Solihull). Yours will be the same if it's a 91. So it's pre-LA which is drums on rear.

Thanks for this, very usefull! Mine is a "J" plated vehicle, but the same applies, still pre-LA. I get it now. Better get me a guide on servicing drum brakes, never touched them before. :D
