hi everyone, this could possibly be the easiest question for you guys to answer but have started to confused myself about the position i should have the shifter in for normal use and the position is should have it in on ice snow etc.. would just be grateful if someone could explain each position for me? as i am going round in circles in my head!

i have a 94 defender 300tdi, r380 gearbox... i think everything is standard.

for normal driving i take it high is the one, but what in snow etc ?

ye high for normal driving. in snow you might want to lock the diff if things get slippery but remembr to unlock it after. you'l have a warning light on when diff is locked to remind you.
 
Same unless you neeed to go really slowly, and if you are likely to lose traction lock the diffs but don't drive on normal high-traction roads with the diffs locked else cogs will fly.
 
low and centre diff locked is good for going down icy slopes. Used it a few times recently on back roads. The Low ratio allows you to slow the vehicle right down which is what you want when you decend. NEVER drive at speed with the diff engaged, when your done with it, switch it back to normal high or low.

thanks alot, thats cleared that one up, similar to what i thought. so i am assuming that if i'm on a little side road (slippy) and driving in 'H' with diffs locked. then come to a junction with a gritted main road, i can only unlock the diffs when in neutral ..?

no just pull it to the right warning light should go out
if it dont you may need to reverse a little.
 
also you should be stopped to engage low range but you can go back to high on the move by double declutchig. (clutch down, transfer box neutral, clutch up, clutch down, high range, clutch up)

Had a scarey moment driving down my hill like this the other day, low 2nd, all locked, suddenly the rear end got closer than it should have, approaching blind corner and sideways, rear was about to hit the hedge (still managed not to touch the brakes somehow) and suddenly as if by magic grip was regained - and group of kids came round the blind corner at the bottom!!! 50p 10p 50p 10p 50p 10p sphincter. EEK!!!
