Hi All,

I'm looking for a compressor recommendation from anyone that may have bought one in the last 12 months or so. I need something that will run from a standard 3 pin plug, and is obviously as high powered as possible.

I'll be using it for normal things like air tools and schultz guns, but I also want to use it to have a go at spray painting the landy. I *believe* I need a 100 Litre tank as a min, and something 12CFM or greater.

Thanks

Adam

Largest tank you can get hold of 200 litre best. 14 cu ft 3 hp is about as big as you can run off household ring main. Even then i would use a dedicated starter switch rather than a 13 amp plug.

rented house, so I can't really go buggering around with electrics.

I've found this Sealey one:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sealey-Co...380549?hash=item51d7977dc5:g:BSkAAOSwWnFV8Gm6

and have read some reports of it being fine on a 13 amp plug. write ups on other sales pages suggest it is a 13A feed.

Anybody know of anything better (By which I mean cheaper!!!)? Otherwise I shall have to consult the boss!

Looks samish unit and spec different badge name. https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/clarke-boxer-14200-200-litre-belt-driven-air/

you're right it does. 2 issues:

1) after the farce I had with my leaky engine crane, I never want to deal with machine mart again... cheap chinese crap and terrible customer service
2) no Amp rating declared on their page. I've read something suggesting that some of the sealey's have a "soft start" to reduct start up draw.

Machine mart do recommend a start switch with most of their stuff this is true. Don't know about the Sealey stuff. My compressor is one i cobbled together back in the seventies does the job for me, but i do use a start switch on a 20 amp circuit. Uses an old single cylinder pump, three horse motor and a 200 litre tank, just keeps on going but i only run it at 100 PSI. It will possible still be going long after i am gone.

Sounds like a solid bit of kit!

sadly I've just discovered that it's the "grey" rang of sealey's that have soft start:

http://www.workshopping.co.uk/produ...-drive-3hp-with-front-control-panel/SAC3203B/

an extra £100, but has a much higher free air delivery rating. lots of these people are quoting engine CFM rather than FAD CFM. I can't find anyone that is quoting CFM@40psi for spray type applications

Hmmmm
Same identical problem and...
Service via machine Mart with my...
Engine crane!!

yeah... they're nobs... it took me months, and refunds were refused because I'd lost the crappy print out... I didn try and explain the concept of a database to them, but they're idiots.

ok folks. sealey soft start. more cfm. and some "extras" £619... catch is, it's 150L

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sealey-SA...139808?hash=item567fca1de0:g:IssAAOSw5IJWc3sN

would I be right in thinking that 150L should do me for spraying the landy panel-by-panel... and that I could add an air-bank at a later date?

Unless you are going to be spraying an housing estate continuously you will manage with a 14 cu ft compressor and 200 litre tank easily. Most will be quoting FAD. At pressure it will be considerable less than that. Depends what gun you use, i have several.. A.I.D are good finishing guns by slow and reasonably frugal with air. Either of my Devilbiss guns throw paint out like there is no tomorrow but drink air even at lowish pressures. More care is needed to use them. But it depends how they are nozzled up.

Thanks Wammers.

Just had a chat with the sealey technical line.... they advised me to spec the compressor based on the air tool, no the other way around.... I explained about my power limitations. the "grey" range has a built in regulator for a regulated feed as well as a direct feed (extra banks?)... so it seems like it'd get me going now, and provide some expansion.

Recently bought the grey sealey you are on about, started fine when empty, but consistently blew the 13amp fuse to recharge in use, so ended up putting in a dedicated feed via 3 phase, not what I wanted as it comes on wheels!!

I realise this may not be what you want as it requires a separate feed to a 16amp socket..
But.. for others reading the..
Clarke se16c150 twin cylinder air industrial compressor is...
Magnificent!
14cfm means most air tools and copes very well with a complete car...
Respay....doesn't run out of puff.
