Hi there,

I keep having a complete loss of power on my Land Rover Defender 2.4L engine. It's not fuel starvation, it's more like a limiter kicking in. It's really dangerous though as there is no warning, no warning lights just a complete loss of power. The engine idles fine though. Im desperate to get this sorted. It happened 90 mins into a long journey.

It idles fine but you put your foot on the pedal and it's like a limiter has kicked in. Sort of a limp home mode you get on some cars.
 
not sure if the 2.4l has a MAF sensor which is playing up or possibly the EGR valve is bunged up making the ECU kick in the limp mode?

blocked or kinked turbo hoses?

not sure about these 'ere modern cars! o_O
 
Yeah ive read a few things about the EGR valve. My local land Rover garage mentioned the turbo hose too. The annoying thing is it seems to only happen on longer runs. But ive lost some faith in the vehicle so a bit loathe to go on long runs!
 
Also, I assume this is a Puma, have you looked thru the posts in the puma section in the engines part of this forum?

Yeah, think they are focusing their attention on the turbo area. I'm just not sure it's that. We are not talking power dropping from 70MPH to 50MPH....i couldn't get 25MPH with the foot to the floor once the problem occurred. It wasn't fuel starvation though. it idled fine.
 
Couple of things you can check;
Have a look at the turbo to intercooler hose run, there is a knuckle joint on the steering shaft (between the steering wheel and steering box) which can rub on the hose and eventually cause a leak / loss of boost. This affected some but not all pumas and was a service recall to fit modified parts. When was the fuel filter last changed, service interval 25k miles but mine started to corrode and presumably let air in to the fuel line (but don't think this would result in your symptoms). Possible fault in the sensor on the accelerator pedal and related circuit? (fly by wire throttle).
 
As others have said, get it plugged in and see what codes you get. I did a lot of searching recently for power loss on my 2.4 and it turned out to be a simple fix. If your fault is always happening then its unlikely to be the same fault, mine was intermittent but everything I read about VCV failure said that it would idle badly but mine never did. How long has the air filter been on?
I ask this because a friend has had a similar problem on a big marine turbocharged Cat, and a new filter solved it.
