I have recently joined the fraternity of landrover owners and have jumped straight into a problem (bloody thing didn't even make it home before it broke down) :doh:.
I was sat on the motorway cruising at 70mph when all of a sudden there was a dull clunk and since then my discovery has had no drive at all :eek:. I have tried locking the diff and seeing if it moves to know avail. None of the props seem to be turning. I can however seem to engage gears without using the clutch which i would assume means the clutch has gone. If anyone has any better ideas or can point me in the way of some old threads on this your help would be greatly appreciated :)
 
I'm not sure how to check i've tried cycling through all the transfer box settings, is there any other way to check?
 
Not really....there's only one lever, it has only a few positions it can be pushed into.

I suppose further checks might be to see how many, if at all, propshafts are turning with the car in gear and the engine running (you say its not moving). Then put the centre diff lock in and observe the prop shafts once again.
 
If you can put it in gear with the engine running then I would start at the clutch. Its the only thing that separates the engine from the gearbox. If the clutch is ok then you would not be able to put it in gear and you would hear the gears grinding.
 
I've tried that i've locked the diff and put it into high and low then put it in gear and nothing no props moving at all. Is there anyway to check the clutch without removing the box? It's the fact that i can put it into any gear without using the clutch that points me in that direction or am i just being stupid there?

Thats what my feeling is, i would have thought with a working clutch trying to put it in gear with the engine running would be hard. When the clutch cable went on my citroen it was a case of having to slam it into gear ( no it didn't do the box any favours but i did get home).
 
I haven't noticed any change in engine revs i'll have a go in the morning see if it makes a difference. Does this often happen, splines stripping, the fact that i was cruising when i lost drive led me to believe that i hadn't done the splines i'd have thought they'd have gone when i was pulling away or something more strenuous.

Won't be output shaft. Would be first input shaft. There's obviously no drive to the box as he can select gears with engine running. If I was the op I'd be taking box off and inspecting the clutch.
 
if the clutch linkage went, you wouldnt be able to get it in gear with the engine runnin,,,
my hi/lo lever moves pretty easily across the gate but its quite stiff to move for and aft to select hi or lo.. it sometimes takes me a few attempts to get it in.. it looks as though its far enough forward but i have no drive.. so return gear ****er to neutral an have to have another go til i get it.. just to be sure make sure yr shovin the hi/lo selector far enough..
and in future of ya linkage goes.. put in 1st then start engine... then match revs to road speed and use synchromesh to change gear... learned this years ago when my minor clutch went.. only problem.. no synch on 1st.. lol...
i also drive quite a lot of the time without the clutch.. just match revs to change gear..
 
you can hear the internals of the box whirring away if you strt th engine and eave it in neutral

get underneath and have a good listen, if that box is silent there is no drive to it. obviously a problem located inside the bell housing im afraid...

That's what mine was, about a month ago. Splines stripped both ends. Was driving happily and slowly, there was a 'thunk' then no drive. Not the end of the world to change...unless you happen to live in Spain where you need to sell yer wife for a scrap transfer and gearbox. I'll miss her mind, she was good to the kids.

either way gearbox needs to come out splines on out put shaft /input gear or clutch centre can check gear box splines by removing rear cover on t/box
 
Sounds like i'm not going to be able to diagnose this the easy way, guess i'm going to have to accept the fact i'm going to get cold and dirty straight into the landrover way of life i suppose. I'm guessing there's already a few articles on how to get the gearbox and transfer box out if anyone could point me in the right direction i'd be greatful, and if anyone knows anybody in the portsmouth/fareham area who's looking for a fewextra beer tokens i'd appreciate the extra hand.

Did you ever get to the bottom of your issue?

Mine has just done exactly the same thing.

Driving along, dull thunk, no drive!

Diff lock/hi-lo range selector all moving nicely and engaging.

And can up and down the gears without using the clutch pedal.

Do i need to buy a scrapper gearbox or just order a clutch?
