Hi,


We are looking to convert a 4x4 so it is suitable to live in for up to a month for various on&off road trips over the next 3-5 years and was wondering if anyone has any recommendation of the best vehicles to use or good companies/workshops (would prefer based in the South/Midlands) to use to do the work. I can be more specific if required.

if you have cash then a 101 forward control would be my money :D

else a 110 is popular, esp with a roof tent or maybe a trailer tent and use whatever you fancy

That is cool as hell, well done with that 101FC You got any more info about it, or just the Pic?

Back to OP of the Thread. What are you exactly looking for? Where do you want to go? What is your budget, and what do you want for comfort features?

There are UniMog Camper conversions that are very nice all self contained and all the features of Home. There is a Forum about them Camping/expedition Mogs

That would be nice to see what they did and what kind of comfort features they have. Would really like to see a Build thread about it. Saw/found a site where they built a Mog and that was cool

They took over from the bedford mj in the mid 90s. They're being disposed of because they've been replaced by MAN's.

Because they needed a replacement because of the brakes...... Mod wanted drum brakes not discs. Very low mileage and in good condition. Just got to redo the brakes and good to go. Dodge parts fit the thing:D

there good trucks i never had a problem with brakes on them :boink:

Where do you get your info? I've never heard of any major issues with the brakes. I wouldn't touch 1, the cabs were prone to rust, and they were crap off road. They were in service for around 15 years. They were replaced because they were to old to economically repair and the engines weren't EU emission compliant.

Sounds very similar to the RB 44, they had shocking brakes that threw the vehicle to one side. They were meant to be a replacement for the 101 but the brakes were awful and the MOD are getting shot of all of them. It cost Reynolds Boughton thousands to fix and they never fully achieved it. Many of their components are interchangeable with Dodge 50's.

Back on subject, a 110 would be perfectly adequate with parts and modificatons being readily available. Having said that the 101 that Trax found is rather nice :cool:

I think he may thinking of the RB 44.

Wasn't someone looking at selling an Defender ambulance a week or so ago? I think it was in the anything goes section.
 
Thanks for the replies, primarily, the vehicle would be used on-road, albeit that the quality of the road surfaces are likely to be variable and we would typically be looking to cover up to 3000 miles per trip in it, meaning regular long drives (8-10 hours) as well as long distances. Looking at going to New Zealand and South Africa in it but also for heading around the UK.

We've been advised against the 101 for the type of journeys we want to do by various people.

depending on how off road capable you want the vehicle to be a 2wd van might be a better solution of the larger variety with a reasonable ground clearance eg

or even 4x4 van eg

the caravan mags often have firms that do these type of vehicle conversions

The South Africa trip will be off road- based on previous visits anything other than 4wd will be v difficult!
 
Talk to the likes of Nene overland and others that feature in the mainstream Land Rover magazines. Nice kit if you have deep pockets.
