Well, after a good few years away from LR after selling my old 200tdi Disco, I am just about to buy another, albeit a 300tdi.
Trouble is, there doesnt seem to be many about in my price range in the SE ( 3K) and those that I have seen have been even worse than my old one! ( which was bad!)

Anyway, I am going to see one on Saturday am ( if its not sold) Wish me luck. I will have to search the garage now for the packs of EVO 1 and 2 oil I bought 5 years ago for my old Disco and never fitted.

3K is way overpriced for a 300tdi

Unfortunately, thats South East prices and I am looking for a top spec low mileage model! Theres even 200tdi`s for £3k + down here! Most are very rusty. I looked at one last week advertised for £2.5K ( N reg) Every panel had bad corrosion and the boot floor was rusty all the way round. Looking in the rear windows you could see the road. Still, the garage chap was busy hoovering it out ready for me to look at...... I walked away, but it was still a 2 hour drive! ( dearest 300tdi down here I have seen is £4750!!!)

Hi Allan please understand that I'm not meaning to be rude, but are you sure that your expectations of condition are appropriate? You are looking at vehicles that were never well protected against rust and are now at least 12 yrs old?

I reckon for your budget you could get a TD5. They do of course have their own issues BUT rust usually isn't one of them.

I bought a TD5 GS recently for £2000 and it is very clean and drives well with superb service history. It wanted a couple of tyres and I gave it a service but a very nice vehicle for the money. A TD5 Disco is a much more refined and more modern feeling vehicle.

I reckon that you need to reconsidor your target car and it's location.

Theres no TD5's around here for less than £3.5k, but, I would rather get a 300tdi, just my personal preference.
I did see a P reg 300 for just under £3k. Bodywork was superb, no rust to be seen underneath, everything solid except a few paint blisters ( which I expect anyway) Interior was reasonable but the headlining was very droopy. Gearbox was shot and the engine wouldnt pull and misfired. It was a garge and they were going to fix it all. Well, maybe they would but I didnt fancy taking the risk.
The rust thing is from past experience where my last one ( a 93 200 tdi) was well and truly in its grip. Boot floor was gone, sills gone inner wings detaching and even a rust hole in the rear diff casing!
Anyway, I looked at a few more and finally put a deposit on one. Its a late 95 ES model, a sort of golden brown metallic colour with tan leather, aircon and all the other ES goodies. 74,000 genuine miles with sevice history. Fulll MOT, cam belt changed at 34000 ( after 7 years) and the garage are changing it again for me as well as looking at the rear transfer box seal ( handbrake oily)
Bodywise, its very good, boot floor and sills look very good, nice dry( ish ) shiny swivels and it drives perfect. Interior is in very good condition too with no noticeable wear anywhere. All electrics work. The only bad bits are the front sunroof needs a little nudge to get it going and the passenger door is tricky to open ( spring gone ? )

I pick it up next week, I will give it a good jetwash underneath and brush the surface rust off before giving a good undersealing. Should last me a few years then.

Ok, so, it cost me £2.5K but honestly, nothing else came close conditionwise, and I did want a low miler. I suppose I could have bought cheaper further away, but time is limited and fuel costs were building up.

I see you live in Whitstable which is by the sea, is it not ? I would'nt buy anything that's been run around in salt filled air. Check the V5.

S'a V good point. I used to live on the coast, but whenever I bought a motor I'd drive inland at least 20/30 miles to look at prospective buys. Have looked at a few motors that have lived on the coast over the years and they were almost without exception right shockers!

We dont get much of a choice around here, but it came from more inland, around Maidstone, last owner had it for 12 years.
Rustiest cars I looked at came from around London. I suppose they get the most road saltings, they dont seem to bother gritting too much around here......

Congrats on the purchase! Sounds like you're happy with your new rig and good on you for that! 300tdi's are tough as nails if they've got a history and maintained, so by the sounds of things yours will last ages. :)

The salting of the roads over your way are killers to most cars after a while, but is an understandable policy so that everyone can use the roads. If it makes you feel better, even my cousins 4yo Lexus is showing early signs of the dreaded cancer, and he lives in Southend BTS. Fortunately, the Landy's here hold up very well and only suffer signs of rust if not cleaned properly after years of abuse ploughing through bog-holes. The killer is the heat for the V8's, and mechanical neglect on them and the diesels.

You've already owned a D1 so you're familiar with the areas of concern, so get onto any issues early and you're laughing. Maintain the bugger mechanically, and you'll have a vehicle which will serve you well for a long time. ;)

Enjoy the many fun drives in the ES and put some pics up to show us! :D

Well, picked the new Disco up today, ES model in Willow Green Metallic and a new L/R cam belt kit fitted. Drives beautifully, everything works but the blower seems to vibrate a bit at speeds 3 and 4. Probably just muck and leaves so i will give it a good clearout over the weekend.
Very pleased with it though. Just found a cd changer under the seat, though I will probably change the radio to a better unit that I can connect my iPhone to.

Here is a quick piccy,

Allan
