There is no How to for cold start problems or glowpugs, hot start is more of a problem. On a a diesel, cold starting problems are either down to low cranking speed (duff battery) or glow plugs.
 
Erm, or air in the system
I guess so if the leak off pipes are shagged, but that can also cause hot starting problems, in tank pump can also do it, but mostly it's glowplugs/cranking if it works well apart from cold start.

Air in the system is an whole different problem. Far and away the vast majority of cold start problems will be glow plug related. A few maybe ECU temp sensor related but very, very few will be air in the fuel. As long as there is fuel in the pump the engine should start any in the fuel pipes should then self bleed as the engine runs.

Had this very same problem with mine. Rightly or wrongly I ruled out the glow plugs as when it actually fired it didn't belch out loads of smoke?? If left for more than 24hrs I would have to bleed the air out of the clear pipe between the pump and the filter or just keep cranking it over until it fired up. After a while my little pea brain worked out it must be air getting into the system.
Hunted high and low to try and find the leak but to no avail. Began to think it was going to have to go in and let somebody who knew what they were doing have a look at it. (more money!!)
Happened to be starring aimlessly into the engine bay the other day trying to suss out what the problem may be when I noticed the pipe that supplies the fuel from the fuel pump up to the injectors looked damp. Replaced it with another piece of pipe and hay presto problem solved.
I think all to often with these vehicles we tend to expect the worse because of their reputations when half the time the problems can be simple, its just a case of sitting back and thinking the problem through.

Anyway 2perry have you fixed your Cold starting problem yet?
 
Cold start problems on a diesel

No glow plugs pre warm no power or no plug working
Air a leak
No diesel out of fuel shut off Solinoid lost sync fip
no compression battery starter motor . valves

Step by step that order its really that simple .

I have her booked for Monday to have plugs replaced but will now spend weekend looking at what you suggest, thanks very much.
 
How about an index in the How To section reflecting the chapters in RAVE? Could add photos referencing the RAVE chapters so people know what they're looking at ... and also what can be left out of the RAVE instructions when they get carried away - like the intercooler flushing!

Think it is better that people learn how to use RAVE themselves, rather than parrot fashion.
